So I was using my iphone even though I had my dslr for about a year that I never used. Just recently started using it and obviously the quality is much better. My buddy tried explaining to me how to use certain features. The main one I am trying to learn now is the white balance. he said if I take a picture of a white sheet of paper under my blues it will offset the color to make the corals pop? How do I go about doing this? Which top setting does it have to be on, M, P, A+? Then how do I set this white balance thing? He showed me one time but then I forgot and he is deployed now. I wanted to take pictures under slightly blue however as always you cant see nothing but blues. I want the glow in the dark look while still being able to see its real color. Also I know aout the gel filters but are there any lens filters that I can buy to just screw on so I don't have to hold the gel strip in front of the camera every pic? Thanks.

Read the stickies here on the site first really really good.
First thin is on full auto just shoot some pics. See what happens.
Iff it's still too blue dial back the blue if your on led.
Learn the camera controls for your camera and try to gat away from the auto stuff.
Find apature priority and open the apature all the way.
Set the white balance using the numbers not the card. Set it to the Hughes white balance you have. Usually 10000 k
Shooting raw generally gives you more latitude in post processing but I find it best to get the cleanest image possible in the camera first.

What I do is I take a pic under the light I'm in and then go to settings. Once there, I click the custom WB and select the pic I'll be using. Depending on the mode you're shooting in, you will select the custom WB setting and snap away. Try YouTube too. I also got a for dummies book. Hope that helps a little.
