My 15 gallon nano Tank has been running for about a month now, with a simple HOB 50 gallon filter setup. Wkly WC of 2 gallon and maintenance
My livestock is at 1 watchman goby(very small guy), 1 royal gramma, 1 emerald crab and turbo snail. Coral 1 leather and a zoa frag. I don’t think adding more coral, then a few more to my clean up crew is a big deal but I really want a small pair of clown fish? Can I push it to 4 fish and yes I’ll be thinking about upgrading the tank to 20-25 gallon tank soon I feel it coming on. Just a newbie wanted more in my small tank world.

I would not. My mature clowns would kill other fish in a 15g.

I would just go upgrade to a 25-30g and still only keep 4-5 nano fish max. You may want to pick up a 40 breeder instead as it has a nice footprint to keep a better variety.

Fish basically get territorial as they age. They need space.

I’m trying to fighting the urge to upgrade so soon. The tank is only 2 month (including cycling) If I can fight the upgrade urge until next holiday season I’ll feel like I’m saving and doing something good for my pockets. If that makes sense. Thanx got your insight and info.

Clowns will overtake and call it their own so I would not suggest it and 4 in a 15 would be pushing it IMO. How are your parameters?
My parameters are good for the most part I’m just going to get 1 clown and go frag crazy. Lol I have so much to learn from my small tank world. I start upgrading around the tank so all I need is bigger tank down the road. Thank you for you insight

Or you could link two tanks to a sump and go from there. Just make sure the sump is big enough

When you are excited it is hard to be patient. But your are being wise taking your time. Agree with work towards a 40 gal breeder. Petco etc. have sales several times a year. Taking it slow gives you time to learn, hone your skills etc.
While waiting to upgrade, study discussions on the Fish Discussion forum here to learn what appeals to you. Watch videos on different species to view how swim etc. in a tank. That will help you work on a stocking list for your upgrade.
Overstocking is never good for any tank. It stresses fish out & can cause aggression. Good for you for asking & following advice!

I had a 25 with 4 smaller fish. I wouldn’t put any more than 2 in a 15. Not only do you have to think about nutrient export but also aggression. Even in a 25, my clown was a bully lol

This is nailing my journey right here. I have so much to learn on the saltwater side of the hobbie for examples a sump @ozborn99 those things are still very overwhelming and intimating to ME!! It’s the main reason I stayed away soooo long. Once people talk about sumps, skimmers and refugiums I feel like a deer in head lights. I’m in an apartment with a 40 gallon freshwater tank I love, space is the issue so 30 gallon would be the max for the saltwater tank (right now). Been in the group for a few weeks now and I am learning so much, I see why people say “start as big as you can” lol!! Looking back I say I wish I just got the 30 gallon tank but then again I’m not because I am so clueless with a few more dollars in my pocket. Imo you gotta just jump in and see what happens bc waiting for the dream tank for your situation is a delay for a lot of people I know watching my journey from fresh to saltwater. Thank you everyone One more fish wins. I’ll focus on keeping them alive instead of adding more for me to see swimming around.

like others have said when you are ready for an upgrade I would look into a 40 breeder. Going to a 20 gallon won’t make much of a deference keeping fish.

30 is my max bc of apartment space. Yea I was just thinking 20 wasn’t much of a difference to the fish. Thank you

The sooner you start the sooner you learn. But make sure you research a lot. You're starting to enter a more complex environment when you get into reefing.

all depends on the clowns, my pair in my 14G are super chill, they dont really care at all. my Gramma just wants to show everyone how wide he can open his mouth but thats it. the lowest on the hierarchy is my PJ cardinal.

I started in saltwater in 1968. I've never had tank with a sump(which is nothing more than a big filter). I've never owned a skimmer. I will admit I do have a refugium now, but for 4 decades I didn't. I don't and never have had any test kits. The only thing I check for is the salinity and temp.
Your doing great coming here and asking questions and reading whats posted here.
If you do (and I would) get a clownfish, you could get it a mate when you do upgrade(and you will upgrade).
