You want to make sure there’s new growth on the upper margins of the shell at all times. I would recommend that you buy this book. Clams need nitrogen and phosphorus, so just feed your fish daily and you’ll be okay. If you want to dose phyto to “feed” the whole tank, great, it can’t hurt and will most likely help. Clams need a stable system with strong full spectrum lighting. Their nutrition comes from the lighting and do uptake nutrients from the water.

Ok, thanks. I am planning on starting to culture copepods, and will have phyto for that. If that works hopefully I will have an ample supply of phyto, so will probably dose the tank with phyto on a regular basis.

Think the spot it is had about 300 par when I tested it, but my nitrates are at zero, a do feed 2x a day, and am dosing ammonia, very slowly. Do you think this would be an issue in the short term?

Are you saying clams would live fine in 0N and 0p. I’ve collected hundreds of clams over the years and they were always more abundant in run off areas. Nutrients are the building blocks for all forms of life. Please ask yourself what do zooplankton eat?

No, as I said numerous times, you want just the regular parameters, one with enough nutrients to help the photosynthesis of clams.

You keep suggesting ABOVE normal parameters, which is not true.

How many fish do you have and what size tank? Dosing ammonium bicarbonate is fine as long as you have the biomass to support the uptake? You can probably increase feedings to help. What’s your current PO4 level?

I have 4 fish in a 45 gallon setup. My PO4 is .08(why I went for ammonia dosing and not just more food). Idk, if it’s relevant but, I have a hammer coral colony(15is heads), frogspawn(4heads), 5 bta(probably going to try and removing these), a small zoa island, 4 polyp frag of an acan lord, a dozen or so mushrooms, and a sun coral. I feed pellets once, and i spot feed the sun coral and feed the whole tank a mix of cyclopses, a homemade fish food with mostly seafood and some vitamin mixs, and mysis shrimp dailiyish(might skip a day here and there).

I think dosing ammonium bicarb to 1-3ppm of NO3 is fine and you probably don't have to do much more than that to maintain a healthy balance. Just watch the shell and make sure you start to see new growth, if not, you may have to raise the light intensity, but I would also use a full spectrum during peak hours.
