I know this has probably been discussed but im currious to hear input on what alk levels are ideal in a mixed reef tank. Is 8 better than 10? If so at what level do you gain growth but lose coloration.

Neither is better.
Best is a level that does not change from hour to hour.
So pick your number, match your salt, and keep it on point forever.
Then the magic happens.

Same as above. Pick a level and keep it stable. Not sure one is better than the other. I'd pick what your salt mixes to, so it's easier to maintain stability when wcs are necessary
