I'm curious how people live with their tanks in their homes

Mine is in the living room.

The TV is off camera to the right. I like to sit on the part of the L shaped sofa in the lower part of the picture (where the lap top is) so I can turn to the left and see the tank while watching TV.

The tank is behind the bar so we can sip cocktails and watch the tank:

I was fortunate enough to be able to build a recreation room around my tank. We have a formal living room upstairs, so this is our comfortable living room, complete with guitars, TV, reef tank and couches. I ran the plumbing trough the wall to a basement sump and water change set up to keep the mess and sound isolated. I also put in a floating subfloor over the concrete slab to keep moisture off the carpet, plus if the tank leaks or spills, it’s set up so the water runs under the sub floor down to the basement where it can drain to the sump pump. It came out so nice my wife even let me upgrade the tank to a larger one, lol! I’m very happy how it all turned out and it’s really nice to be able to fiddle with the tank while my family is chilling in the room with me. Not separating myself from the family to work on the tank is a major positive in my opinion. Plus, I did all the work myself, so it’s pretty satisfying. I hope you guys like my work!

Mine is in my dinning room. I'm limited to an 18" deep tank or I wouldn't be able to fit the dinning room table and still have people sit at it, but is a focal point of the house. I actually bought a 225 gallon tank before I realized the dinning room table woudn't fit and had to resell it. Now I've expanded to the basement with a 125 gallon sump, and am going to add frag tanks to the same sump.

Our 120 mixed reef is located in our living room directly behind the couch, between two french doors that lead out to our 3 season porch. The tank is the first thing guests see, when walking in from our dining room. I am not completely exaggerating when I say, we may have picked the house due to it having the perfect place to put our reef display.

Peninsula style separating the kitchen and dining room. The plan is to put a bar on the kitchen side when the little ones are out of diapers and the changing table is gone.

We spend a good 75% of our awake time in these two rooms, so the tank had to be in a high traffic area.

And the short wall made it an easy decision, and the length was 74" from wall to end of trim, maybe the choice of a 72" tank super easy

@stanleo what a fun post! I've loved seeing everyone's tank placements and tanks - mine is in the living room / main room under the TV (we hang out TV very high so it's out of the way). Our kitchen/living room/dining room is all open (and small - because we live in the SF Bay Area and couldn't afford both a big house and a mixed reef tank....). I spend much of my time sitting in that ridiculous bean bag my husband brought home as a joke that is immediately in front of my tank.

Also have a small planted tank by the front door in the same room.

Mine is next to my couch, dining room, and viewable from everywhere. The thing is somedays you don't have time to do much on the tank and just having eyes on the tank whiles your eating or just chilling is crucial, especially when life gets busy.
I have it in the same place... dinning room and I cant see it from the living room. I love to look at it while I eat.

I tried to figure out a way to sacrifice anything possible to make my tank peninsula style, but it wouldn’t work for my house. Maybe I will go house shopping

Could have run it behind the couch and put a bar ledge on the other side of it no? Just spitballing ideas..
