I found a source of rust in my tank and I have eliminated it. What impact could rust actually have on a mixed reef? I mean like what signs would we see to cause alarm? Certain corals or fish sensitive?

Mostly corals retracting not looking as good. An icp test would be a good idea to see where your metal levels are at so you know if you need to do anything about it. And it never hurts to do a good size water change to be safe

I'm past the issue. I did 4x 20% wc's every 3 days. Tank is good. A cyano bloom clued me into the fact that I had an equipment failure. I'm just curious about the rust (iron oxide). is it really a problem and if you had it in your tank would there be any signs?

Depends on what type of metal is being rusted.

Go do a search on what GFO is made of.

I had this happening very discreetly with a gyre wet side. Within a a month and a couple water changes everything completely turned around, virtually night and day difference.

Remember that objects not designed for reef tanks like razor blades, could potentially have other elements other than steel. Everything is made of metal alloys. So you could be up against things you are not aware of.
