Easy test is pulling them out of the water and seeing how fast water drains out of them. If water is slowly coming out, it's time to wash or change them.
 
Washer machine them with no detergent just hot water and a splash of bleach. Double rinse and don't dry
 
Also turn them inside out first, forgot to mention that. Get as much stuff out as you can. Sometimes snails get in the sock, I always shake them back in the tank
