I was wondering if these pumps can be used external? I found this which states they are not supposed to be used external, is this correct? If so why? Thanks

Most aquarium pumps are submersible pumps, which means they have to be submerged in water to function correctly. Internal, I believe, would mean that the pump needs to be used in water. The external pumps are usually more powerful and more expensive, I believe. If you need more info you can always google the differences.

Agreed. Internal pumps rely on water for cooling the motor, while external pumps need a larger body/heatsink to do so.
(Though AC pumps can run pretty hot without damage)

These have been run externally with success. The front housing allows water to get around the impeller and cool it on the larger pumps (DCA2,000 and up). I recommend a length of vinyl before hard plumbing, as too much stress can crack the front housing.

I wasn’t sure if it was a cooling issue or a volute issue. But nevertheless they have a picture of the same pump plumbed externally on a pond.
