I'm newish to the hobby and can only share this: I am about 4 weeks into using an Octo HOB100 and I like it for my 30g mixed. Sturdy build, quality motor, quiet operation. It's a bit pricey around $200 but I didn't want to screw around. I had to modify it a bit to add an overfill line but now that I've run it for a few weeks I don't think the mod was necessary.
