Again, hermits do not kill corals. They will walk on them, steal their food but are excellent scavengers and go places and eat things that snails won't. Only thing I've ever seen or heard of is that they will kill snails for a larger shell or if there isn't enough food in the tank. A couple of extra pellets every now and then and some extra empty shells will take care of this problem. I would however keep hermits away from any small, fragile and expensive frags as they might dislodge them or disturb them and hinder their healing time and growth. Larger snails can also bulldoze and knock things around. I've had turbos dislodge 3 of my expensive frags and they knock frags off my rack at least twice a week.

The hermits won't directly kill a coral, but they can learn to take the food from the corals mouth causing stress and damage. Same thing for other types of crabs and shrimp. Usually it's not a big deal, unless it's concentrated on a particular coral. I've had enough indirect issues with shrimps and crabs in the past. I don't have or need any in the reef tank.

Thats what my understanding was, I must have misread info here though...i thought the hermits were directly linked to eating the dieing coral tissue indirectly causing further decline of the piece?

absolutely not. Only thing I know that eats coral flesh are bacteria, certain fish and other corals.

That sucks! It's such a slow grower too. I hope you at least got a refund to put towards another one.

Did you get store credit? Was it a shipping delay? Sorry to hear about that. It's tough hearing about a loss. Especially when so much love and care is put into this hobby, not to mention money.
