I decided to break this little tank down. It never really thrived and I need the space that it's taking up when I decide what I'm going to do with my failing reefer 300 the 8g sits next to.
I moved the pistol shrimp and goby into my IM20 since it's the only other tank I have with sand. The sea Apple is still hanging in there after 9 months. I moved it to the sump of my 330 where it found a spot in the flow going over the weir to the return section.

Figured it's time to start my own thread and stop cluttering up @tbrown thread 😉 which has quite a bit of activity with a lot of ideas.
I received the tank as part if a promotion from one of our supporting vendors @IOAOI and my goal is to spend as little cash as necessary since I have a lot of gear sitting around.

Tank filled 6/14/25

I set the tank on a black WB stand that I had sitting next to my living room tank, a WB 330.7
I decided to set it next to my Reefer 300 since it's really the only place left in our small house to put a tank.

For lighting I'm using a gen4 XR15s on a modified noopsyche K7 III pro tank bracket. Since the tank has a baffle dead center in the rear chamber I had to cut a slot on the bracket mount.

Scaping was a challenge. I'm not really good at it and have never scaped a tank this small before. After multiple attempts at creating something cool I decided to stay with my tried and true pile of rocks against the back wall.
I actually like it and am hopeful it will work for what I have planned for tank I habitants.

Sand was dry with a few spoons of live sand from the IM 20 but the rock is all live rock that I've kept in wet storage.

I'm running an IOAIO Nano return pump but was not happy with the amount of flow I was able to get through the back chamber which caused the level in the display to be higher than I like. With the pump in the lowest setting I only had 3/4" between the water surface and the tank rim. I removed some teeth from the wier and am now able to crank the pump up to max amd still have the same 3/4" distance . I'm ok with that with the pump at 100% not so much at minimum.

I'm not planning on keeping anything that will get through the larger openings but if I do I can add some 1/4" mesh to the back.

I have a JBJ ATO and the float switch fits perfectly in the 3rd chamber.
PXL_20250615_031134733.jpg

Since this ATO doesn't include a pump and the top off amounts will be small I'm going to use a brs 50ml a minute dosing pump and am going to run the tube over and share the 10g ATO container on the reefer 300.

__________________________________________________
EDIT 6/21/25 Got the ATO up and running. It isn't pretty but it works. The doser is silent compared tunze on the 300 ATO

I used silicone tubing from tank to the reservoir then I attached a section of RO tubing and placed it through the hole I drilled with a step drill. The hole is too small for the silicone tubing to fit so the tube acts as a stopper so the inside inside tube isn't sucking off the bottom.

I'm open to suggestions on a heater. I have a few spare heater controllers but no heater small enough.

My media basket and nozzle came today from @Projects with Sam Thanks Sam! The basket fits perfectly. The nozzle is just plain awesome. Now I can get decent in tank flow and some nice surface agitation. I was not able to get much surface agitation with the stock nozzle. I thought about going with a RFG from VGA but didn't want the lock lines in the tank. The tank is so small they just stand out too much for my taste.

PXL_20250620_165749392.jpg

A sample of the surface movement. I'm big fan of surface agitation. I think the oxygenation is a big plus and who wants to looks at a dusty protein slick on the surface. Pump is only running 50%

6/14 NO3 8.5 woot woot I love me some live rock to speed things up.

Now to start considering livestock. I have something in mind as a center piece but I have to research a bit more before committing. I want to run with just enough light for viewing so there will be no photosynthetic creatures. It's something I've not done and I try to do something new with each tank when I start one. Plans always subject to change tho.

Thought I'd add a few recent images here on the first page .

Wow really looks great, this is going to be a fun project. Scape looks great and more than just stacked rocks and that’s coming from someone who just stacked rocks when I got in the hobby in the mid 90’s and felt no reason to change this go around.

Nice looking little tank and an inspired reuse of existing gear. Looking forward to seeing where this goes. Are you sure you have enough light though with only an XR15 over an 8 gallon tank 🤣
Its a gen4 and they are much stronger than the new ones so I should be able to get by 🤣

We have life. Added a few pellets and little critters came out. It's amazing how long these creatures can live in a dark cold brute container.

Been seeing a few asterinas also but I've been removing them and tossing them in the 300 where the Harlequin is.

I added my oldest hermit. Figure he can be a tester and will be something to feed so the tank gets fed.

PXL_20250626_203730034~2.jpg

I have my LFS keeping a lookout for a sea apple. I know the challenges but I'm hoping in a tank this size I can keep it fed. It think one will make a very cool centerpiece. I'm not planning on any fish but if I do add any I'll probably just bring up my little pair of black ocellaris from the basement.

PXL_20250128_003649132.jpg

I'm enjoying the clean look of the tank so I have no plans to add coral and will just run the light low for a couple of hours at night for viewing. There is plenty of ambient light for day time viewing.

Stopped by my LFS and picked up a high finned goby and a candy cane pistol shrimp. They are tiny little guys and disappeared immediately and stayed hidden for a few days. They finally made an appearance last evening. I'm hatching brine shrimp to feed for now. So far they have 3 separate entrances to their tunnel system under the rocks.

I'm only running the light at 3% for 2 hrs a night so im not sure why but I have some algae growing on one of the rocks. It may be the light spilling in from the 300 I suppose. I added a fuzzy chiton to see if it will clean it up. It's an interesting creature that I've not seen before but have read about. I'll move it out to one of the other tanks at some point so it doesn't starve.

My old Yasha/Pistol combo found a spot in the back corner where I never saw them except on rare occasions when they came out the front of the rock instead of hiding in the back.

After the Yasha passed, I never saw the Pistol again but I'd hear it back there clicking away off and on if a snail or hermit got too close for his comfort.

Shout out to @CoralsAnonymous where I found a sea Apple on sale so I bought one along with a Sea Squirt and 3 NPS gorgonian frags. It was my first purchase from them and I have no complaints. Everything arrived looking good and packaged very well.
The Sea Apple had pooped in the bag and from reading that is a tell that they are getting the nutrition they need so that's a positive. If you don't see them pooping then they aren't getting enough to eat is info I've seen and it makes sense to me.
I bought a gallon of mixed phyto from @drivingmecrazy crazy that I have been adding to my 20g to help the baby clams along so I decided to start dosing it in this tank. I had spare head on my reefdose 2 that I use to dose AFR in 300 so I just moved it between the tanks and set it up to dose .5ml every hour. Total volume is about 5g. It seems like everyone doses a different amount of phyto per gallon of water so I'm just winging it and will keep and eye on things.

When I first put the Sea Apple in it wandered around. Its an interesting creature that's for sure.

More poop yay lol

It finally attached to a small rock

PXL_20250716_170227195.jpg

I was then able to move it front and center, hopefully it will stay there. Shot from a few minutes ago

It appears to be eating. It isn't aggressively reaching and gathering food like I've seen in some videos but it is putting all of its tentacles out then pulling them inside its body, closing and repeating so I'm assuming it is eating.
It just pulled its tentacles in to remove the food they gathered.

This is all new to me so I'm learning as I go which is fun for me and the reason I like to try something different when I start a new tank.

I’d highly recommend live-plants.com for their NPS/PS gorgonians. The ones I got are absolutely huge and i had to trim a bit off to fit in my tank!

IMG_0202.jpeg

I’ve been feeding them baby brine shrimp once or twice a day. These grogs can clear up a surprisingly large amount of BBS from the water column in a short period of time.

Those are huge. Thanks will check it out. I'm starting my hatchery back up this evening this evening.
