Just got a 13 Pro and while I was able to take some close-ups with my 11, the macro function paired with the new lenses are next-level. I am a bit of an amateur when it comes to photography, but I’ve been known to take a good pic with my SLR from time to time. Wondering if anyone with more experience has any advice on settings, setup, etc., for the iPhone 13 Pro. In the meantime, enjoy my first attempt

Did you change any think on your 13 pro I got one and. Can’t get good pictures
No, but you have to get it into macro mode. With the latest iOS it should engage automatically, but check your camera settings and make sure you see the little flower icon in the corner when you’re taking the pic. That indicates that macro mode is on

Can you please explain how to get such great pics out of the 13 pro? I just upgraded from the 10 and my pics are awful now. They were great with the 10 and a brown filter.

Check out post #4 in this thread about the macro setting.

But one other trick that I didn’t mention was “setting” the white balance. I put setting in quotes because I don’t actually set anything, rather I fool the phone’s auto-balance feature. For instance, turn the camera function on, but before you aim it at your tank, aim it (in full light) at a white sheet of paper, then quickly move the phone/camera to the tank. The phone will hold its white balance setting from the white sheet while you’re focusing, etc….

Take a pic…

Depending on what you’re shooting, it may or may not look good. Try the “setting” trick again by first pointing at something else. I found that pointing at my sand, which is off-white, but bathed in blue light, is often a good middle-ground for getting the look I’m going for.

just try different initial colors and take pictures of different corals at different times a day. Won’t take long for you to figure out the combo that makes yours look best.

hope that helps!

Cool
I’ll try it. Thanks. Will that help with the “grainy” look also? I can’t get clear pics through my top down viewer at all with this $1500 point of sale camera/computer/phone thingy :p:p

The pro’s zoom lens is a 3x level of optical zoom. If you had a long lens attached to an SLR, you could increase the optical zoom by, well, zooming in.

If you zoom in on an iPhone there is no optical zoom above the 3x (at least as I understand it). When you zoom in with your fingers above 3x, you are performing a DIGITAL zoom. That means that instead of zooming in because the glass (the lens itself) has the capability (like an SLR), all you’re really doing is blowing up the pixels to make the subject look bigger. Problem is that just expands the viewable size of a pixel that has an already defined size, and that’s when you get the grainy. So first, don’t zoom in digitally on a lens past it’s optical max.

Aside from that pictures tend to get grainy in low light situations because of the amount of light that is hitting the sensor. Again, playing around in the way I described in the last post might lead to you finding an optimal situation that gives you the best color without the grainy.

You can also go into Home->Settings-> Camera and make a couple quality changes there. Like appleRAW etc. but the file sizes are big so you will definitely have to export them or your phone will fill up fast.

Just tried it with my 13 Pro using suggestions mentioned both without and with filter. Some shots were amazing , some not so much, but I think it’ll be a matter of practice. Here‘s a few thar got just few minutes ago.And thanks for the inspiration.

Looking good! Happy to help!

(and yeah, I get 10 not-so-good ones for every really good one. Just post the really good ones and delete the rest!)

Bro, they were okay.

I was pretty pleased with myself and my frag rack with mostly tenius. I took 2-3 pictures on my phone that I planned on sending you, but the pictures were atrocious.
Maybe not great but better than most ppl post

That was just a clip on brown filter and done.
I can’t get the new phone to focus on anything closer than 12”
