I think a lot of the discussion here is that many people do understand the limitations of the tool or understand what it is equipped to help with and what it is not.

That's understandable, I wanted to respond to the post I was quoted in to clarify how I was using AI with my tank planning since I stand by it being useful in the way I used it. I've enjoyed our discourse over the last day and hope I haven't come off as confrontational with you. If so, was not my intention.

Also, poor OP is going to be an extra @scaredmantisshrimp when he opens his notifications.

I started reading this out of curiosity trying to understand why anyone would ask an AI for advice on natural systems. AI can be good at looking for trends, spitting out stats and making annoyingly glitchy images but AI can do nothing more than spit out bits of 'knowledge' gathered from many different sources, sometimes in a cohesive manner.

Any seasoned reefer knows that a reef tank is not made by committee or averages. Every tank is unique and every reefer is unique. What you get asking questions on forums like R2R, instead of some compilation of disparate concepts is help with your system that fits with your needs.

I think it’s one of two things with that. Either the question asker is shy and/or antisocial, or they believe that technology is better than humanity at answering their questions. Or both?

Responding since my comment was the origin of the response, I was using Chat for a few reasons.

I've been using the program a lot with my job and wanted to see what it's capabilities and limitations were in regards to my hobby. I enjoy the planning side of the process a lot and Chat is able to quickly give me options and ideas rather than waiting for a human to respond.

I found it useful for quickly estimating prices, finding stocking ideas, and seeing potential issues I may run into. Additionally, it was able to create visuals based off my plans that gives the analyst in me a dopamine hit.
Once I did all my preliminary planning inside of Chat, I took what I found and did research independently away from it with forums, other reefers I know, and my LFS. The current step in my planning is sharing my current thoughts and plans here for others to voice their opinions and check if I've missed anything important.

And maybe I'm a little antisocial but the fish tell me it's fine to keep talking to them.

That’s cool, and I can see where it could potentially save time too. (I talk to my fish all the time! )

Not exactly on topic, but a worthy tangent..

To me, this is the fundamental issue. Not so much the accuracy of the ai answers, as they will surely get better and better with time. The bigger problem is people willingly surrendering their desire to communicate, learn, critically think, experience; individually or as a group. The "instant satisfaction" condition. Being mentally challenged/ stimulated is the main reason I am in this hobby in the first place(as are many, i assume).

To exaggerate..
If a ai controller existed that would tell you exactly what equipment to install, chemicals to use, fish to stock, and do it all for you... are you truly a "reefer"? Do you really know anything about the ecosystem?

Consider gps navigation in cars...
How many people can't read a map these days? How many people remember how to get somewhere, that they navigated a week ago via gps, without it?
Easy come, easy go. But this is our mental acuity we're talking about, as a entire species, being willingly forfeited.

If the matrix was real and available, how many would happily plug in to a virtual existence and not truly experience the miracle of life In their physical body? I'm guessing its a significant portion of the population, there are a handful in this thread alone. It's a dangerous thing.
What happens when more advanced ai, developed, taught and trained by us, is given a physical body that more capable than ours? What role do we play? If people are isolated, can't critically think, and want it that way, what happens then? How far away is that?

I want to clarify since you responded to my post. To me, AI is another tool at our disposal that, like with any source of information, you should verify when you ask it for advice.

In my personal experiences using it (which I made a thread detailing) I found it useful for finding fish species that I did not consider keeping before it suggested it. Additionally, it helped me predict some potential issues I might run into with my stocking. I agree that building any fish tank is a personal and creative process that, having someone or something make all the decisions for you takes a lot of the enjoyment out of the process.

Use it for things it's equipped to help with and not with things it's not. I don't (usually) use my drill to hammer nails since that's the wrong tool for the situation. An example of this is I decided to not stock a starry blenny in my tank and wanted ideas on other algae control fish. It provided a list and why it did so, I researched a few independently of chat, and then chose my replacement. I could have done the same thing using the forums here, searching online, or asking at my LFS but I think I would have gotten very similar results.

Can you please point them out or message me with the info? We only use real human accounts on staff here at R2R. We also don't employ any type of forum "add on" software that deals in AI. Zero.

If you ask more about the clown fish, it’ll tell you to add it in the middle and then tell you to add in the front then you minded that you said in the middle then it corrects itself lol

Add 10-20 Mexican turbo snails, or astraea or a combination of both

Add a yellow coris wrasse. Peaceful. Durable. Bright. Good pest hunter also.

You can start off with a smaller amount if you want, but getting more ahead of time will help prevent problems from developing. Each one individually doesn’t really “do much” for algae and detritus. Strength in numbers

Conch is the best addition I ever made for my reef. They stir the sand and spend all day cleaning sand. One fighting conch saved my sandbed and keeps it clean. I really feel with two, one would end up starving. One is enough.

If you can get them as a mated pair, then ok. If bought randomly, as in two randoms from a tank with 10 in it…it’s like 50% chance they will get along long term or not

3. I bought them for my favorite LFS they were in the same thing and we’re chilling next to each other I asked a couple employees about cycling and they told me that fish in cycling is the way to go and I ultimately ended up getting the two clown fish and now they’re in the tank
