Is My InkBird Heater Controller Working Like It Should?

No, I didn't calibrate the InkBird, I don't see anywhere in the instructions I found online to do so. And why would calibration affect the variance?
It would not necessarily match any other measuring tool, on its own, no issue.

But when I go through the setup mode setting high, and low and that stuff, one setting, maybe the last one allows me to increase the temp readout up or down by .1 degree, ie, I can make it read 78.9 when it’s measuring 78.8 by increasing calibration by .1.

I use this on any new controller as out of the box, who knows what the accuracy is.

In setting mine I used the average of 4 different tests.

If I remember, each time you press SET, it displays a setting, to move to the next, press SET again.

Yes, my InkBird does have that calibration feature, but that would just adjust the temp to another known to be good thermometer. I found my InkBird to be very close to my recently calibrated tank controller temp probe, as well as my Hanna CheckTemp thermometer; all three are right around each other.

And I still don't understand how calibrating the temp will help with the differential or range of temp I'm seeing. I'm not worried about the temps its reporting, only the +2 degree difference between the min and max, and just over a few hours of use.

Again, I think my ITC-306T just isn't as good as the ITC-306A since the latter allows for a 0.5 degree differential. I was going to pick up a 306A, but wouldn't you know it was $35 at the Big Online Bookstore just last night, and today it's $49 :-(

I know we all need to stay within whatever budgets we have.

I will just say this, I figured the Helios was a reasonable compromise between all of the cheaper alternatives and the Ranco controllers, and this is an extremely important part of our reefs. So I justified the extra money for me.

Don't get me wrong, I very much consider myself a budget reefer, no doubt :) But the above post was more about how the price changed so quickly, I should have ordered it last night if I was going to.

The tank in question here is actually my new invert QT tank, and I'm just starting to build out my new DT now. I do have a Ranco for the DT and I'm interested to see how it performs vs. the InkBird(s). I looked at, but have not tried the Helios yet, I know a lot of members here really like them. But I'm pretty sure the gold standard are the Ranco controllers as they are used in industry; we'll see.

I maybe should mention, this is all on newly started tank, it has no livestock except some rock, so just kind of trying things out at this point.
 
The calibration doesn’t affect the swing you’re seeing. I have a 306A and I rarely see it above or below my set points. If it is, it’s only .1 degree over/under. Sounds like there’s an issue with yours.

Update: Right or wrong, I'm not real happy with the way my new-to-me ITC-306T is working, I have ordered a new-new ITC-306A with the wifi. We'll see if this one is any tighter.

The dual probes is a great fail safe.
The 306T only has one probe, so two probes plus the smaller differential (0.5 degrees F) and I think the 306A will outperform the 306T.

In order to calibrate the temperature reading on your instrument you have to have a sample of water with a known temperature, such as an ice bath of fresh water (not tank water) which we assume to be 32 F or 0 C. This you can believe to be true. But it is also important to calibrate within the range you expect to measure because the response may not be linear. Meaning that if you calibrate at 32 F, the response may drift when the temp is actually 78 F. For this this you need a reliable known temp around 78 F. The aquarium water should be something like 75 - 80 F, but stable +/- 1 F or less. To calibrate the inkbird you need to prepare some lukewarm tap water and measure the temp with a mercury in glass lab thermometer. For example, lets say the reading on the lab thermometer is 76 F for lukewarm tap water. This will then be your known gold standard. Then put the inkbird probe in the lukewarm tap water sample and set the inkbird to 76 F. Ideally you should calibrate at BOTH 32 F ice bath and lukewarm tap water. Recalibrate regularly - every few months is fine. Note: calibating at 32 F and ~76 F is close enough for our needs even though salt water is slightly different from fresh water. Sea water freezes at ~ 28.9 F. The salt dissolved in sea water changes the freezing point and boiling point compared to fresh water.

I'm questioning the range I'm seeing between my min and mix temps over just a short period of time (>2.3 degrees F). I believe my ITC-306T is just not as tight as the ITC-306A, or that my ITC-306T is not functioning 100%. Right or wrong, I did order a brand new ITC-306A wifi, I'll see how that one performs compared to my current InkBird. Thanks again for your reply!

I understand. I don't really know but I was suggesting that a miscalibated inkbird probe might be the cause of 2.3 F variance. Perhaps not. But in any event the new ITC-306A will probably fix the problem. Best of luck!

Thanks again! I am hopeful the ITC-306A Will be better, it has two probes and allows for a 0.5 degree F variance from the set temp. The ITC-306T only allows for 1 degree, so right there it's not as tight even if it's working well.

One more follow up on this topic. My inkbird is setup at 77-78F with 2x 500w heaters for 165gallon of water. Yet the tenperature swings all the way to 80F. How is this possible? Something isnt right... replace it?
 
I did in fact replace my ITC-306T with an ITC-306A and it is indeed working much better :)

I don't know if the ITC-306T just isn't as tight, or if mine wasn't working well, but no complaints with the new ITC-306A I have now.
