I want to start a phytoplankton culture but I want to know if there's a way of making it like for example leaving it out in the sun or something Thanks in advance ;Smilie

Sure..I raise literally gallons just to feed BBS to feed Seahorses, which then turn around and die if the cat farts... I’d skip the very overpriced Phyto cultures from pet supply chains and get disk from Mercer of Montana or Sachs ... I use 2 part Guiliards from Frits but any commercial formula works... Contamination & crashes are a issue so keep pure starter cultures in fridge

It is easy, but it takes some work. It will do well under almost any lighting - so no need to use sunlight. Just some flow, food (fertilizer) and light and you all set. You don't have to be any fancier than some used 2 liter bottles and a cheap air pump.

I used to make it when phyto was all of the rage like acropower, reef roids and colors additives are now. It multiplies fast once you get going. I doubt that it ever did much in my tank since I never noticed any difference once I stopped.

Keep your supplies clean or stocks can die off.

I just started culturing it to feed copepods. It’s very easy. People are willing to buy your leftovers.

The DIY formum has several great examples. We recently started this effort for our reef & are enjoying the results. You can find the thread in DIY here if you are interested to see the progression.

I also recommend this quick primer:
