I've never seen or used a gate valve in person. Is the size of this valve "normal" it seems abnormally large to me.

Well it depends the pipe you working with. If it’s a bigger pvc pipe then of course the valve will be bigger because more water pressure.. you don’t want to have a lot water pressure and have a small valve and then it breaks on you..

No, I totally understand that, I just didn't think gate valves were this big. I had never seen someone's plumbing and thought that the gate valve stuck out as abnormally large. And the pre-made tank plumbing always look so sleek.

The valves at my work are huge when there 1 1/2 inch and up. So maybe I’m used to seeing them that huge. But I would be comfortable using that then a smaller one lol

It’ll be less noticeable with everything put together!

To avoid any confusion here; the pressure side of typical aquarium plumbing is rarely over 20-25PSI, and the drain side is maybe 7psi max… these are extreme scenarios with high head pumps, and one story tall drain plumbing…

We use these schedule 80 PVC gate valves not for their high pressure rating, but for their superior build quality/reliability!

Gate valves have to be physically larger than ball valves in general due to how they function; incremental adjustment of a gate, vs. on/off for a ball! (Yes, ball valves can also be used for incremental adjustment, but they are not great at it…)
