Some consistent themes

  • Use of negative space
  • Rule of thirds
  • All imply an infinite depth (no black backgrounds)
  • 3 levels of visual interest, from right up close to far off
  • Mature corals, tightly packed edge to edge (no loose, "leggy" growth forms)
  • Color consistency, not one of every color
  • Different angles of view, not just straight on portrait
  • Mostly small fish to portray large scale
  • Water clarity matters (even though reefs are full of particulates)
