A buddy of mine bought a pair of Reef Casa Flat 6 tanks to use for frag growout. He had them setup and full of water before deciding to go big with the 100g Waterbox frag system, so he drained the Flat 6s (never saw frag #1) and put them up for sale. I've been enamored by the Flat 6 since its release, so I couldn't pass it up (kind of bummed I didn't get both of them). I've had this tank for a while now, but I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do with it until recently. A recent remodel on my home office, and some new furniture purchases gave me the perfect spot for it, and I was in love with the dimensions of the tank, but what do I put in it?

After putting the tank in my office and staring at it for a few days, it hit me. I have a growing collection of Jawbreaker mushrooms scattered around a few other tanks here. They're doing OK, but trying to find a balance of flow and light that's agreeable to them is difficult in nano tanks that are setup for other things. So why not setup a tiny shroom lagoon, JUST for Jawbreakers. So the name "Disco Inferno" (i.e. Discosoma) was born, and I formulated my plan.

While the tank's primary use will be growing out my ever expanding Jawbreaker collection, it will also be their display. For me, "display" means sand and aquascape. So that was next on the list. I could just throw some sand in there and scatter the growout tiles around, but who wants to look at that? I want some height (not much available in a 7" tall tank), I want some depth. I want it interesting to look at, so I grabbed some freshly bleached shelf rock, some Marco powder and thin super glue and got to work.

And here's what I came up with...

Top down will always be the best view in a shallow lagoon tank like this, but in order to give it some visual interest from across the room, I angled the shelf a bit so the mushrooms would be a bit more visible from the front. I'll still have them on their tiles, but this will make the tank a little more interesting and less "sterile" looking.

And this is how it looks in the tank...

Once I get the substrate in (mix of Special Grade and crushed coral) it will look like the shelf is basically sitting on the sand, with a slight angle towards the front. Most importantly, there's plenty of room for shrooms!

Trying to do a new build with everything else going on this time of year will probably be slow going. Luckily I had almost all the things I needed already though, so who knows? I still need to build and paint a slab/pedestal for it to sit on. I learned that a pedestal with felt feet is an game changer for small countertop (or cabinet in this case) tanks. Maybe I'll get the build done over the next couple weeks faster than I think.

Here's the equipment breakdown for the build:

Reef Casa Flat 6 AiO (16x15x7)
Reef Casa Media Basket
Jebao DC-650 Pump swap/upgrade
VCA RFG Flow Kit
Sicce Jolly 22w Preset Heater
AI Prime HD
Luxdium LuxEngine Gold LED upgrade (running the "Ultra Blue" color mix)
AutoAqua Smart ATO Lite

And that's pretty much it! Shouldn't be too crazy of a setup, and it doesn't really need to be! I can't wait to get this thing up and running and get my Jawbreakers into their new home!

Things are moving faster than I thought. I'll probably have the tank wet this weekend. So I got down to getting things in place and ready to go.

First up, pump upgrade!

I've seen people say they thought the stock 500lph (132gph) was a little too much for this tank, so I swapped it out for a Jebao DC-650 (650lph/171gph). It may seem counterproductive to upgrade to a higher flow pump, but the DC controller of the Jebao pump will actually allow me to tune the flow anywhere between 51gph (30%) and 171gph (100%).

Plus, it's tiny!

A small update...

The Jebao pump was loud. Like, really loud, so I swapped it out for a Sicce Syncra Nano (110gph) that I had in a box. Needs more flow, though, so it'll be temporary until I find something else.

I also moved the Prime HD from my Nuvo 10 over to this tank. I had a Prime with a LuxEngine "Gold" LED puck in it, but the one from the Nuvo 10 has a "Cyan" puck. Since I'm running mostly blues, I like the look of the Cyan puck better.

I also dialed in the PAR with an Apogee meter. The whole tank is now in 85-115 PAR. It should be perfect!

The big update, though, is that I added some unplanned livestock. A friend of mine is getting out of the hobby for a bit (moving), and clearing out his 310g aquarium. I went over there and ended up leaving with a Springer's Damsel, a Blood Shrimp and a Godzilla bounce.

Since all my biomedia is well cycled (3 years), I went ahead and added the damsel and shrimp and moved all my Jawbreakers. Everything is looking good today, but obviously I'll continue to monitor things.

Latest update: I need to get the ATO setup! This thing evaporates more than I thought it would. I have an AutoAqua Smart ATO Lite for it, so that's today's project.

Otherwise everything is doing well. The fish and shrimp are motoring around and eating, the shrooms look good. So far, so good!

Well, that was quick! ATO is up and running! I didn't mention it in the last post, but I got the tank with a couple nice add-ons, one of which was the Reef Casa "Backpack" ATO reservoir. It's a sleek, simple 2 gallon acrylic ATO box. It's all opaque black with a clear front panel so you can see the water level.

Works like a champ, and looks perfect next to the rest of the setup.

Still on the prowl for a better return pump option. I'd like a DC pump so I can have an easy access, push button feed mode and the ability to dial the flow right where I need it. Until then, the little Sicce continues to move water.

Best of luck to setting up the ATO

Lights are just coming on for the morning.

I moved a couple zoa colonies in from another tank to see how they would do. So far, everything seems happy.

The current Jawbreaker collection consists of two different "normal" Jawbreakers, two different Eclectus, a Kryptonite, and a Deadpool. I'm driving to meet a guy tomorrow to pickup Candy Crush and Purple Monster babies.

I also have a dime-sized Godzilla in there that my buddy gave me.

All the mushrooms are still mostly nickle-sized babies, so it'll be while before there is much to look at.

The tank has a clean-up crew!

I added snails to the few I already transplanted from my other tanks, so now there are 10 Dwarf Ceriths, 5 Ceriths and 2 Asteraes.

I'm picking up copepods tomorrow, so I should be good to go!

Added a group of 5 tiny Blue-leg Hermits and one of the smallest Tiger Conchs I've ever seen to the CuC over the weekend. I'm currently in the peak ugly stage, so I'm bolstering the CuC while all the nutrients stabilize. I skipped last week's water change to help get phosphates (.03ppm) and nitrates (2.6ppm) up a bit. My targets are .10ppm for phosphates and around 10ppm for nitrates. The mushrooms are looking better every day, though.

While I originally intended to get pods locally, I couldn't find anyone that had more than a single type available. I wanted more diversity then that, so I ended up ordering the multi-species pods (and phyto) from Jay's Reef Bugs. Then, of course, the weather turned to crap and shipping got delayed. They should finally ship today, though!

For anyone following along... I plan to change out the return pump and switch to a dual RFG setup in the tank. I have to keep the flow pretty low and easy for the mushrooms, but the current setup is just not nearly enough flow in general. There is a film on the surface of the water that I just can't get rid of.

I ordered a Jebao EP-1000m (95-317gph) pump and will be going dual 1/4" RFGs when it gets here. I should be able to get a little more flow than the 110gph Sicce Syncra Nano is giving me, and the dual RFGs will allow me to spread it out more without blasting anything. DC control and push-button feed mode are both bonuses too.

So some plans changed. The Jebao pump I ordered needed to be put into service elsewhere, but I still needed a pump for the Flat 6. The Sicce Nano is a nice little pump, but it just wasn't moving enough water to keep the "oily film" from covering the water surface.

I spent a bit of time searching Amazon and came across a line of Landen controllable DC pumps. Reviews were good and the $38 price was right, so I ordered the BIOSMO 700 and had it the next day.

The pump fits fine in the back chamber, but I had to get a little creative with the return tubing and elbow to get it all setup. It wasn't an issue at all, just took a few minutes of test fitting, adjusting tube length, test fitting again, etc. In the end, it fits like a glove and does exactly what I'd hoped it would. And I have a push-button feed mode!

I'm running it on constant mode, on power level 4 (498lph/132gph) which seems perfect with the single 1/4" RFG kit, and it's perfectly silent. I'm pretty happy with the way it's running now, so I think I'll hold off on the dual RFG kit for a while. If I do decide to go that route, this pump will have plenty of headroom for upping the flow even more.

The
The tank is hitting its stride. Copepods and daily phyto dosing are bringing me out of the ugly stage. The shrooms are looking good, so... time to add some more!

On Tuesday, these will be arriving...

Kryptonite JB

Unnamed Pink Disco/JB Looking Thing

received_683226010560031.jpeg

Rainbow Deadpool (with a baby)

Then next weekend, I'm making a trade for these three...

It's filling up faster than I thought! :D

So the current count is....

2 different strains of "normal" Jawbreaker
2 different strains of Purple Monsters
2 different strains of Eclectus (normal and reverse)
Rainbow Deadpool
Kryptonite
4 different Candy Crush (that all look COMPLETELY different)
Unnamed Pink Jawbreaker-ish Discosoma

...and my lonely Godzilla Bounce.

On the hunt for a few more that I've seen kicking around (Strawberry Cheesecake, 5 color Poletti, and VDM off the top of my head), and I'm still trying to find the secret to getting good pictures of them. It doesn't help that they're all still pretty darned small, but they're a lot cheaper that way. :D

That looks nice!

No real updates to speak of. It's cruising right along. Everything seems happy. I've been dosing live phyto daily and doing my 1/2 gallon weekly water changes.

I'll take some updated pictures, but I need to rearrange some stuff first. I temporarily moved about 10 colonies of zoas in there from another tank, so it's looking a little crowded at the moment. :D

As a side note... I might have another Reef Casa build thread coming soon! ;)
