Japanese Butterflyfish / Chaetodon nippon
SCIENTIFIC NAME – Chaetodon nippon
COMMON NAME - Japanese Butterflyfish
SIZE – 5.9" (15 cm)
MIN. AQUARIUMSIZE - 55 US Gal. (208 L)
FOODS AND FEEDING– The Japanese Butterflyfish consumes filamentous algae, plankton, crustaceans, sponges, hydroids, soft corals, sea anemones, stony corals, polychaete worms, and fish eggs. In captivity, it can be offered a varied diet for carnivores and herbivores, frozen marine fare, finely chopped seafoods, and various algae sheets. Should be fed a minimum of 2 times per day in an established reef tank, or 3 times per day in a fish only system.
REEFCOMPATIBILITY – No, unless kept with fairly noxious soft corals.
CAPTIVE CARE – The Japanese Butterflyfish can be kept in small groups if all specimens are introduced at the same time and the tank is large enough. This species should be kept with peaceful tank mates until it is fully acclimated and feeding strongly. It prefers a system with adequate swimming room, plenty of hiding places and temperatures in the range of 61-78 F (16-25C). An established reef structure with good algae growth is a plus when attempting to house the Japanese Butterflyfish.
