Here's a skimmer I made for my 8g Cadlights last year. This is copy and pasted from our local forum (I wrote this - and referenced the reef builder link). I bought wooden airstones on ebay after trying to make my own. My DIY wooden airstones seemed to do ok for about a week, but then they'd plug up. It's easier to buy them, so I went that route.

Found this while in search of a decent nano skimmer.

$1 Mame Nano Skimmer clone is a ghetto-fabulous DIY deal

So I figured why not? I found an adjustable air pump and 50ft of line in one of my boxes of crap. I drank a bottle of water. Only thing I don't have is a wooden airstones. Trying to source a few locally.

So I have this other nano skimmer that I got when I had my first 24g nano (it's crap and I broke the ceramic shaft). I took the skimmer cup off and noticed that it fits perfectly on the bottle with the lid off. So I'm going with a DIY Mame custom with a skimmer cup. I think it'll offer even that much more contact time and allow it to work much better. Probably going to paint the bottle black so it blends in a bit more. It'll be in a chamber anyways, but this way it won't grow algae.

I'm going to zip tie the bracket from the old skimmer to the bottle as well so I can adjust the height easily.

Here's what I've pulled in a week:

Here's what I got in 2 days. And I'd just added after a 80% water change

One more, I also raised my Skimmer and added another pump. The one I was useong was just a average 5 to 10 gal. Airpump. And I had it wide open. But when I added another to the line, WHOA! IT REALLY TOOK OFF. SO I had to really cut back. I plan on buying a single pump from wall fart when I can. They have one for 20 to 30 gal. And one for 30 to 60

Well here's my second little load. So I'd say it does pretty good.
