My old JBJ 28 HQI, no skimmer, no media basket, same Phoenix bulb.

How often did you do water changes ? Did you dose anything ? So you didn't use the media basket ? Not even for a sponge? What did you have in the center compartment ?
That pic looks awesome. I hope I can grow coral that well.

image.jpg Today I changed the light bulb. I installed a new Phoenix Hexarc Blue 14,000K metal halide. The bulb I took out was a JBJ 14,000K bulb that was in the hood when I bought the used tank. Wow....what an amazing difference in color and brightness.

I try to do 10-20% monthly on all my tanks.
For that tank I was dosing Kent Parts A/B with Kalk. I am a huge fan of kalkwasser. Kalkwasser needs to be slowly dialed in but is very effective when mixed with top off and allowed to settle prior to adding to the tank.
With that tank I just stuck a larger piece of foam under the over flow on top of a bag of charcoal. In my new JBJ I am using the media baskets for phosguard, foam and charcoal.
At one point I had a CPR fuge HOB in the center compartment, the fuge while cool did not prove to be of any significant benefit to the tank.

Your tank is looking awesome, the tank has come along way in a short time. :-)

Thank you. Although I had an issue with how my live rock was shipped, it recovered and the corline algea brightened back up. I'm starting to see some life re-establish itself on the rock.
I'm using picking lime in my ATO water.
I'm on the fence about adding activated carbon to the center compartment. Do you use it 24/7 ?
