So I am a clam sucker from way back. Its been several years since I have been active with the clam stuff, but I just placed an order. Got a 6.5 inch beauty comin from Pacific East Aquaculture. So when I left the clam realm pinched mantle wasnt solved yet (there were theories) and Skinz was on RC. I also understand I cant run GFO, but I believe I read there was one type of phosphate remover I could use (can someone please fill me in on that one). I feel comfortable with species and requirements. I already own the books. Ive been poking through the forum some. Oh yea phyto was almost a requirement then. Anything Im missing? A good thread on the newer revelations etc

Skinz was saying last week that Phosguard is the one to use because it's aluminum based which doesn't trigger PM like its iron based counterparts.

Pinched mantle? Never heard of that. I have a deresa clam in my 90 and I run gfo, he is open all day and loves all the phyto I add. Is pinched mantle only caused by gfo in other species.

Yep, it's granular. Larger grains than GFO, but should still tumble well in a reactor.

You can use GFO just build up to the final amount you plan on using, hence don't dump the full recommended amount into your reactor at once build up to recommended amour over a few days. This is actually a better method to using GFO for your whole system. I always ran GFO in my tank before I started vodka dosing, and never had any problems, just remember just like anything else we do in this hobby gradual slow changes are best!

I am currently running gfo, if I pull it in the morning and run double carbon is that ok prep for the clam arrival?

Swanny hit it on the head, the Seachem Phosguard is aluminum based where as the others are all iron based. I also use Poly Filter pads in my system for phosphate removal. I truly believe that iron based GFO and poor collection tactic's were the trigger for many cases of PM back in the day. It is pretty rare to see PM in clams now a days. As for treating PM I recommend starting out by running carbon hot and heavy and if things don't look better within about a week then do a FW dip.

As for adding phyto, I don't add any to my system. I do have a pretty large fish load so I attribute my clams health to that and heavy lighting.

I think you will be fine if you remove the GFO and run some carbon.
