Hey Guys,
Just wanted to let you know that yes New Orleans was spared for the most part from Gustav, as the national news has said; however, Baton Rouge (The Capital of LA btw) and most every other parish was hit hard with homes being demolished. It just seems like all the big news stations care about is one particular city when a storm hits. Most everyone in Baton Rouge and cities nearby (where I live)and cities statewide are still without power and many areas of the city are being told that power will not be restored until 2-4 weeks. Some hospitals are still on generators which mean no air conditioner, nursing home patients have to get their diapers cleaned by flashlights, some arent even cleaned. Until recently no food places, and two to three gas stations to service a few cities where you waited in line for 4 hours + to get gas for your car or generator.
<Deep Breath> NOW that the "insignificance" rant is done, let me turn to FEMA. Now i dont wanna make this a real political thread...but here are the facts. Supplies did not get here until two days after the storm in many areas...There were being held in Texas until the storm hit. Ok now, you tell me there wasnt a place in LA to safely store supplies. Blue tarps did not get here until yesterday, needless to say people have been without a roof since monday and yes it rained everyday since. Next our FEMA POD (Point of Delivery) or something like that was closed today due to the fact that they ran out of supplies =/. By the way that ONE POD was put there to service about 40k people in our city. Baton Rouge has only two(~430,000 people)... Be prepared to read lots of rants for FEMA once again after everyone is restored. And there are plenty other cities in LA dealing with the same shortage of supplies and power outages.

Now for the better news, this go around we planned extremely well as a state and only suffered few casualties due to Gustav. The governor in my opinion was on point being where he needed to be and speaking on what was needed to say. As for my tanks, all I had was a battery powered air stone pump and a turkey baster lol, so I managed to keep Oxygen present the four days with out power. We had a generator, but only could run (main pump) for short times due to gas shortages. No fish losses :D, but Im afraid that most of my zoa collection is gone (shrunken pen tip sized white spots) :( At one point I was ready to just leave the tanks be and drive to Texas/Mississippi, but i couldnt just leave my fish behind to die. One of my fish (clown) has been with me through Katrina and now Gustav. Now by in no means do I want you to take this whole speech as a complaint or whatnot. I am EXTREMELY grateful and thankful that we have our lives and our homes, that our families are safe and power miraculously restored. Now that Im done, I shall go bathe as I hadnt had one in more than a few days, as we didnt have water lol.I will do my best to respond back to this thread the next few days, but I will be cleaning out freezers and also hopefully assisting with the national guard at one of the PODS. I just wanted to let ya'll know that us folks down here in Louisiana are recovering and plan to be better than ever once this passes. Thanks for the support and prayers for a speedy and safe recovery!
