Just how bad is Facebook really?

Agreed that FB is good for local groups.

The problem with groups there in general is that they are not really building a searchable archive of information like here.
Every post just sails off into ephemera. What's the point.

Toxic interactions are generally your own responsibility. Don't be friends with those people and don't stay in those groups

Yes, but there's something to be said for your tank is crashing and a (more experienced) local reefer comes over to see what the problem might be. Just a couple of weeks ago I was able to help a lady who lives like 3 minutes away with a velvet outbreak. I also feel better about buying/selling locally; rather than rolling the dice on PayPal, does it really look like what I see in the photo, shipping, etc.

This isn't a knock on R2R, but rather how regional FB groups allow locals with common interests to connect face-to-face. :)

Totally agree BUT I've met all my local reefing friends through R2R and other forums. What did we do before FB? We met on forums and at the LFS. Both are great for this and it's not exclusive to either/or.

I met my best buddy @ylreefer here. He introduced me to his friends. I introduced some others. Also found a few others in my area here on R2R. We now have a reef club of about 30 people. I did all of this without facebook.

Totally agree BUT I've met all my local reefing friends through R2R and other forums. What did we do before FB? We met on forums and at the LFS. Both are great for this and it's not exclusive to either/or.

Unfortunately, most of my local reefing friends aren't on R2R or have left here. So the only way for me to stay connected with them is via texting or FB.

I’ve tried to talk some of my other friends into joining R2R. And they said they don’t like forums. They keep telling me to join IG as there’s so many coral pics. Neither of us have listened to each other.

I hate that. Who left and why? We don't see many people leave. On the other hand we've never had more people joining and active in our history! YAY for reefing! :)

The appeal of FB is it's a one-stop resource. You can talk reef, communicate with friends/family members, and keep tabs on what's going on in the neighborhood all in one place. :p People are lazy, and only want to use one platform for everything! In my home state the other forum is defunct (they turned it into a FB group), and yet people still don't want to access the one forum that's left standing. :(

I do not use FB for groups.

I have been in the hobby for 30 plus years and I date back to Fishnet which many wont have ever heard of. It had allot of the people who are now or have been authors and more of the advanced people in the hobby. Everyone like Dana Riddle, Julian Sprung, Charles Delbeek, Ron Schmick, Bob Goemans, Albert Thiel, Steve Tyree, Eric Borneman and the list goes on.. So many great minds in the hobby in one place. We will never see anything like that again and never see debates like that again. It really was the beginning of the hobby and where allot of the stuff we know now started.

I basically keep FB to stay in touch with these people because few use the forums and most wont touch the forums. I use FB to stay in touch with others like Bob Fenner and see all his scuba pictures. I look forward to them every day because I do not get out diving much at all any more.

FB is littered with political post and people being rude. I do not go there for that and basically stop following anyone who makes these posts.

Forums like this one represent the best model for information sharing on the internet. Its a shame that FB has made so many of them a ghost town. If they don't have someone impassioned at the helm like the Rev, they are pretty much done for.

I like FB for seeing what friends and family are up to, but I sort of wish the groups would just disappear.
The one good aspect is they easily seem to attract people from other countries- maybe some international growth could happen here...

Unless you work in high "sensitive" subsets of the government, you have NO clue how many people have access too, and use of, your freely shared information.

I never had a real account but one of my friends was addicted to FB. He posted just about everything that was happening in his life. His wife of 15 years was also following his page when one day an Ex Girl friend of his started posting some damaging info. Basically showing some overlap between the time he got married and the time they split up. Long and short was that he was in court six months later and she took him to the cleaners.

I had FB when it first got big and didn’t use it much. People would always post pics of their food and scramble for likes as if it were a competition. I always hated that aspect.
