Hey All,

This "venom" looking thing that I presume is some kind of sponge is getting bigger. At this point it's growing more onto the rocks than the coral but I'm wondering if it's something I should be concerned about and remove.

It's currently living on one of my torchs.

Thanks

The picture is hard to identify which superhero or villian you have. It almost looks like a cyanobacteria mat?

If it's a sponge, it's an ugly one and I would probably remove it for that reason alone, although if it is a sponge those tend to be desirable.

So, I don't see a clear path to recommend, until a better id or image is provided to guide the decision?

I never saw a black sponge before but if it does not bother or overtake any coral around it I would probably let it be.

There was something about black sponge in the early 2000s that has stayed in my head since. I dont recall if it was a certain black sponge or all black sponge. Anyway it would kill corals it was near something it would release I think. So I still remove any black sponge I find because of it. Was this true? idk for sure but I saw lots of pics of hammers and torches that were dead and had black sponge infested in the lower skeletons and frag plugs.

Well, it's ugly and what is touching the coral looks like it's harming it so I think I'll remove it just to be safe.

Thanks for the help everyone.
