Keeping a collection of corals in your aquarium: Do you have a favorite type of coral?

While some reef keepers focus on diversity, many of us are drawn toward a certain type of corals and find ourselves building a collection of a certain type of corals. This may be a small zoa garden or the entire tank may be focused on torches, anemones, or some other group of corals. Let us know if you tend toward keeping a specific type of corals or maybe there is a coral that you look for when you go to a LFS, a coral show, and when attending a live sale. Whether your interests go in cycles, or you have always had one type that catches your eye, do you have a favorite type of coral?

My favorite types of coral include scolymia, indophyllia, acanthophyllia, cynarina and platygyra. Also just noticed my favorite platygyra is listed in the Tidal Gardens sponsor advert for this post haha

I like all sorts of corals, but I like zoas the most
Team Zoanthids here as well. They're what got me into corals and 10+ years later I'm still obsessed with them. I just wish the ones I like the most wouldn't melt on me.

If I had to choose I would say SPS are my favorite, that said I don't have a collection or group of any one species (Well I guess acros but that's a different story). . . I do have a few LPS gardens/at least the start of them. I have a little hammer garden started, though I worry there different locals could allow them to sting each other??? and I have a "galaxea island" I will try and post pics in a few or when off work. . .

(and yes, I know the small pink coral on the far left is a cristada torch, it will be moved. . . eventually).

I guess I go through phases through the years but zoa's, ricordia and shrooms are always in the mix. For my latest iteration add hammers, torches, frogs/octos and goni as my new obsession. Think I have 32 pieces of Euphyllia now in my 200 :face-with-rolling-eyes: and a smattering of alveopora, goni, trachy's, acro's, echinata's, blasto's and misc other.

Favia are my favorite. I have a mixed SPS LPS tank with only one right now. I’m going to get another nice colony when I find one. In general I like LPS the best but I like both branching and plating montipora so I keep them too. I like to have a variety of corals. Favites are nice too.

I haven’t seen a Favia/Favites that I really like since getting my new tank. I’ve been filling it mostly with corals I haven’t had before because my LFS had had some really nice ones and it’s fun trying something different.

I love Acanthophyllia and Scolymia and have 5 of each in my reef. Don’t love the prices!

My favorite are Orange Polyps( favorite Color) and Green Star Polyp. GSP are so underrated. For such a pretty coral to be as cheap and hardy is a blessing. Love em

Monti cap has always done it for me since I was a kid when I frequented aquariums. One of the classic corals that can be found in almost every home and public aquaria and it is obvious why. Spongdes is just on another level of incredible with that growth pattern
