hey i was thinking of getting a mandarin for my 20 gallon after i have all other fish and corals in and settled i will have an hob refugium setup and il let it develop a lot of pods for the mandarin by waiting 4 months after refugiums setup but what other foods would be easy for them to eat is it common for them to be already eating other foods at the store?

I believe that tank will never have the pod population you need to keep that fish alive. Also it doesn't matter if they eat prepared foods they still need to be able to constantly eat around every 10 seconds.

It is not common for them to eat prepared foods. A single mandarin can deplete the pods in a tank twice that size.

Only way that could work is if you culture or buy pods weekly, the mandarin will slowly starve. I resisted buying one for my 70g since I have 2 leopard wrasses and culture my own pods. Mandarin are one of my favorite fish.
