So I did my first frag and right when I cut a piece off it closed completely and shriveled up a lot. Is this normal? And if so how long does it take to open back up?

yes it is very normal for it to close up , and it should open soon in a matter of days or even hours .

Its a kenya tree so I'm not sure you can kill it. When I cut pieces off of mine it'll be unhappy for a day or so. Honestly I hate mine and I wish cutting it would kill it.

I’ve heard a bunch of nightmare stories about it and is actually the reason I trimmed mine to try and keep it small. It’s about 5 inches big right now

As long as you're staying on top of it you'll be fine, just keep an eye out for baby kenya trees and remove the ones you don't want

It's good to stay on top of trimming other wise it'll drop babies that will grow in random spots in your tank. I unfortunately learned this the hard way.
