have a kole for several months...been through 3-4 week hospital since he came with velvet...has been doing fine in 65 fowler...he eats well, picks continually, no spots although he does seem to flash on the sand here and there...fins also seem more clamped than usual...he's in with a niger trigger, fire fish, black sailfin blenny and cuc...main thing is that he seems to be getting lighter and less blue in his stripes...do I have a problem...?...If so, what might that be? Thanks...

Can you provide pics? Mine always seems to be changing from lighter to darker or vise versa making the patterns more or less pronounced depending on time of day, during feeding, etc.

What did you do to treat him in the HT?

@4FordFamily may be able to offer some thoughts.

They lighten in color with stress. I know that's pretty vague but I would check water parameters,

If flashing or scratching that means it has some parasite still. Perhaps ich which is why it's recommended to treat for 4 weeks in copper then observe for two. It could also be flukes, as well perhaps treat with prazipro.

Any new wet additions in past 6 weeks?

Was the Kole in the display when he came down with velvet? If so, did you treat all the fish and let the display go fallow for 6 weeks?

The niger eats everything...I wouldn't say bullying...he's fast and first to the food...good bit of algae in the tank and I feed all manner of food...

Everything you said except for a month...all fish taken out...Darryl, who is a mentor for me...says it sounds typical for a kole...the niger may be eating more than his share...Oh, and I started Selcon on the food today...

Fallow for a month will do nothing unfortunately, therin lies your problem unfortunately.. it might grossly reduce the population of the parasite but it can take a few weeks up to a month or more before it takes over again based on many variables I've had it happen myself several times.

I agree with Ford. This is the problem. You have to leave the display fallow for 6 weeks to be completely clear of velvet and 76 days for ick. 6 Weeks would probably be fine for ick as well, but there are strains of ick out there that will need the full 76 days to be clear of the display. Unfortunately, the whole process will need to start over again. QT, Treatment and fallow.

Oh good. It seemed that it was only a month from your post. If all he's doing is color fading in and out, then I wouldn't worry too much. I've seen some fish lose almost all color, then when food is dropped in, the color comes crashing back as he attacks food. Pictures would help in this case I believe.

6 weeks fallow eliminates velvet; but ich can survive without a fish host for up to 76 days.

I would still consider behavior/mood. Sometimes my kole looks light, faint, brown and devoid of any real coloring. Other times it's much deeper blue/purple and even the color of the lips pops. All depends on the situation.

He's in with a niger...haven't seen any out and out hostility...but a bump here and there...the kole is also staying behind the rock more...seeing less of him...

Interesting, does the fish ever not have those faded like characteristics? I have mine in with a one spot foxface, nearly zero aggression. The tang can look faded, but could be swimming with the foxface, other times it's not. There could be an ailment of course, couldn't hurt to investigate temperament as well.
