Hello Reefers

Attached is an image of my two candy cane colony’s:
1. Kryptonite candy cane
2. Teal candy cane

My question is how can I get the “kryptonite”
So have the same puffiness as the “teal”
If possible.

They are in mounted on my rock structure that receives 70 PAR at its peak

and nutrients are stable and perfect
I’m not a new reefer so please save the “what’s your nutrients” questions

Hi,
I think you just have two different varieties of candy canes that differ in polyp size. I don’t think that is anything you can change. It’s really no different from zoa polyps coming in different sizes. They are the same size within the colony, but differ between varieties.

They both look very happy and puffy to me.

Thanks
They definitely are different but I do see some people posting the kryptonite candy cane that’s look absolutely puffed up just wondering if I can get that same result

I have the same two colonies and mine are the same. The kryptonite aren’t as puffy. The only thing that makes them swell bigger is the feeding response. If you give the polyps a small piece of food or LPS pellets, they swell as the eat. But it’s a temporary response.

But yours look good and healthy. Enjoy them.

I have the kryptonite version and very puffed up. I think your calcium and magnesium are too high. If this is a new addition it may be stressed as it is acclimating. Overall it looks healthy. Watch for retraction of the polyps. Mine is midway up the tank with medium indirect flow so you might consider placement as well.

Since you are not a new aquarist, I’ll skip discussing the topic of parameters. Also as an enlightened hobbyist will forego the topic of Nomenclature.

So what I will state Is this:

Dogs come in a variety of breeds. So if you bought a Chihuahua and a Great Dane, would you eventually expect the small to become big and vice verca?

I am asking this ridiculous question because both Varieties are of the same genus, and could be labeled as such. Likewise you have two breeds of Caulastrea spp.

Apologies, it is late and my insomnia is flaring up.

Lastly I would like to speak to variety of coral types. Candy cane(Caulastrea app) were given this common name because traditionally they were red(other polyp) with white stripes(septa ridge of coallite), with a light green to white center.
Depending on your preference for light color(6k - 20k kelvin) the popularity of which variant you selected is what should matter. Plus keeping them healthy.
