I expect an unknown bacterial or viral actor. In my own tank when pH is maintained at 8.3ish, the opposite happens. The coral appears to create a sterile zone around itself, clearing the ground for growth.

Heh it's got some bleaching on back but...it's an orange one of these, someone else figured it out.. Today it did open with some small polyps visible.
