Is it safe to use lava rocks for aquascaping or even for biological media? If it's porous like live rock and same properties as dry rock, should it be safer since it's basically the same? I'm asking because i had an idea about aquascape for the nano cube that i was planning on starting soon.

The problem with Lava rock is that it can contain metals and so is generally not a great choice for rock in the tank.

This is true for black sand as well. When I had some, stuff didn't look too well. Triton test revealed high levels of aluminum. After removing the black sand the aluminum disappeared..
