Hey guys, my leather coral hasn’t looked happy in what feels like a month and some change. Any advice? All other corals seem happy and are growing.

Tests from this morning

12/18
Calcium - 420
Alkalinity - 8.3 / 1 mg dose
Magnesium - 1200 / 10 mg dose

It does look like there’s some small new growth at the base. He hasn’t fully opened in a while which is a bummer as I’d like to add another leather in the middle. Anything helps!

Sometimes I hate this app on mobile haha it said there were two photos in my post.

My lights take a bit to ramp up, he’s more up right now, but still never opens

Being under the powerhead in a corner like that, it might not be getting enough flow. They like good flow, it helps them stand up straight, and will slump down like that if not enough flow

I originally placed it here and it seemed to be doing fine. I moved a few months ago and placed it where the torch is because this issue happened a few weeks before moving. I thought more flow would help but it didn’t change much. A month after moving I got the torch and moved it back some but still no luck, that’s why I’ve placed it here for now. Maybe I’ll try moving it more in the middle

Lights are fully ramped and this is him at the moment. The polyps just never fully open anymore. Lots of them extend but only about an eight of an inch not much more when they used to be maybe half to 3/4 and inch and fully open.

What kind of light are you running? The long thin stem might be an indicator, if it was getting enough light the stem would be short and fat. If you google some images of a toadstool online you will see what I mean.

It’s an AI prime. The settings I’m not 100 percent sure of anymore because I got a new phone and it doesn’t pop up on the app anymore. It was based off the saxton setting but tweaked based on a BRS video.

Here’s a photo of it in June. I placed it in a similar location even after the torch, was happy, moved it to a similar current location before moving and it was opening but it hasn’t looked like this for a while.

Mine is also under an AI Prime in a 15 gallon tank, its set at 80% for 10 hours peak. Stem should be short and fat and polyps swaying gently. Good luck

Mine is a 20 cube from waterbox.

I’d love to look at my light settings but know it would reset whatever the current settings are so I’m a bit scared. Maybe I’ll try moving it somewhere with more flow but my ai Nero is at 55 percent so I feel like the tank in general has decent flow.

i am going to try to get an answer the easy way sorry to interject. Would this apply to a kiwi Tree as well? Its about9 inches high and usually stands tall but about 3 times it collapses the rejuvenates

itself . Almost like its molting. Do you think flow applies here ?

Sorry my friend, I never had this kind of coral

The par required is not that high This is not from another source of information . It is from my own experience with my 25 year plus Tank. 150 is the high end
Oh?! Thats new info to me. Because this was the info given to me by my lfs and it seems to be working for me.

Well I am not going to turn this into a peeing contest just letting you know that my statement is not an opinion. An LFS employee was responsible for taking advantage of my ignorance which cost me 17 fish . Which is why I take advice from here and people that I know are competent. Did you measure the Par ? Just curious. I use a very low wattage light on my mushroom farm 😄. It only has 3 light spectrums. I am sure 50 Par is no big thing . If whatever You are doing works than who am I . As above though would like the answer to whether you measured . Its not easy to get accurate readings I have an apogee and did tot even think of the readings being effected by the screen on my lids in any great amount. I was wrong all my readings I took with no lid were lower by 15% with my mesh lids . I am now in the process of changing them all with more open plastic mesh that claims not to block the light . I am still making them and have not checked . Also surface disturbance gives you a huge spread. Tons of things that effect it. I did a map of my tank and would get a 20 % drop sometimes a few inches away from the last

I just checked the good old internet it backs my statement up 50- 150 . I talk to 2 LFS guys at 2 Different stores because I know they have been around for years the other owns raises and frags his own stock , and will not sell me something ie fish without Quarantine . Even people here just say stuff to be heard. Have to admit I have been guilty myself but now contain my reactions. Have fun
