Hello,

The new bubble tip anemone went wandering and collided with my new "rescue" leather that hasn't been doing well at the LFS. They said it hadn't ended in a few weeks.

What do you think? Will it recover? I was shaking it off in the tank water bucket this evening to get some of the flaky white mucus off, because I read an article saying that helps. How do you think it looks? Also, do you know what that worm on it I'd is? Very small and red.

Thanks

It's got more brown junk clinging to it, and little brown things are sticking out of the pores a bit. Molting or dying? Expelling more zoos?

Give it time.
In the morning you’ll know.
If it hasn’t sropped “weeping “ you’ll want to toss it.

It’s also one of the grumpinest corals around. Nice med flow. And patience.

It will probably be just fine. My anemones and leathers have been fighting for several years with no casualties at all. The leathers get ticked off but they are very hardy as long as water chemistry is good.

Leathers slime up to protect themselves. This coating comes off in the current pretty quickly normally. They do need a decent amount of flow. As long as it does not start discoloring it should recover. If it starts discoloring that area and be cut away to prevent it from spreading.
Was it expending it polyps before? If not what are your tank parameters? in my experience leathers do not like high calcium levels.

It's brand new and was already distressed when I bought it. They said it hadn't extended polyps in awhile.

Main thing wrong with my parameters is that the pH is low. I have determined that is due to air quality in my home. I tried raising it with buffers but when that didn't work, I figured out about the air quality. Buffers raised alk to 18. It's down to 16 now. Calcium was 550 now 480. Everything else is fine.

I don't know that I'd be comfortable cutting off the whitish colored area that it came home with. That's also the area where it got stung. It's looking a bit better and color is improving generally.

It is not going to be happy until you reduce your ALK and Ca. In your case your ALK is very high. A water change is usually the best way assuming your new water is not high as well.

It's alive!!!!!! The leather opened for the first time today!! I had noticed it moved a bit when I blew junk off of it, and had started looking better, but it has actual polyps sticking out! And it's not all folded up! Wooohooo..... Now the hammer still has to recover.
