Leptospirosis? Coral care

Hello everyone,
I picked up a little frag today that I’ve been eyeing. It’s a leptospirosis correct? As far as placement, moderate to low flow , indirect/ partially shaded area bottom third of my tank? This is a photo off the internet but is identical to the one I just purchased. Thank you

Moderate light and water flow and salinity 1.025, CA 409-450, mag 1309-1400 and alk 8-11
Assure po4 does not get highly elevated

Yes it is a leptoseris. I would place in low to moderate lighting, but not so low as partially shaded or indirect unless lower parts of your tank are getting blasted by light. I keep mine in around 200 par. Moderate flow is good but again would not go too low they can handle a good deal of flow.

Lol, no that is a disease, this is a leptoseris. Lithophyllons look very similar as well

Pavona, not Leptoseris*. Leptoseris do not have flat skeleton, but usually have folds

Mmm interesting, a pavona coral. Thank you. Guess I’ll have to wait and see if it just encrusts or develops projections. I’ll keep it about halfway down the rock work partially shaded and see how it reacts. Here’s a picture of my placement

Mybluepavona doesnt have that pattern. It does look like a lepto to me. Mine is low light med flow. I have a golden. Slowwwww grower!

I Really hope not. leptospirosis is a bacterial disease in dogs.

It also doesn't look like a Leptoseris to me. Never seen a lepto fuzzy like that.

Yeah, I'd also say pavona, since it's fuzzy. Though I'm not sure care is all that different for the two.

Try not to get leptospirosis in your tank :-p
As Lost said, it's a disease that dogs get, but many species will happily infect humans and cause disease.

So I will just throw this out there: Lepto and Pavona are different corals but are often mislabeled. However, the care is very similar for both. I keep mine in anything from medium to low light, high to low flow. Medium flow, lower light seems to bring out the best features - hairier look and fast growth. The ones I have in higher light tend to be more smooth with significantly less PE but still decent growth. Low light had the faster growth and they tend to glow more in the lower light.

Is this a different species of leptoseris than most of the ones in the hobby? I've never seen one that has the separate polyps like that, only ones that all flow together, like these: https://www.tidalgardens.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Leptoseris

I think it was a Leptastrea.

Leptoseris do not have flat coenosteums and have their corallites placed farther apart.

I remember there was a study done on the indo-pacific argariciids (Gardineroseris, Leptoseris, Pavona) and they found out that the 3 genera were actually polyphyletic and that they should all be placed into one genus. Not sure when the taxonomy for those genera are going to change, though.

Yeah, that was Reef Builders I think.
