Oh... And just an FYI.... VarioS 4/6/8 all have the same physical dimensions, so you can't gain any room in that chamber by going down in size. :-(
Agreed. I was annoyed by that too. But you can go down in price! LOL. But the extra power might by handy later. “Better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it”.

Yeah... a 6 and 8 are the same size... and an SS-48 and SS-60 have the same size return chamber. And, I AGREE!!... a 60" sump should NOT have a 7" x 8.5" return chamber!! The VarioS is 7.5" x 3.75" with the intake guard installed (can you confirm 7.5"?)... so a return chamber of even 8" x 8" would have fit them PERFECTLY! Doesn't seem unreasonable on that size sump?!

Bashsea has two "SS" series; the Signature Series and Smart Series. I have the Smart Series sump and my chamber is .5" smaller than the Signature Series, that could make a big difference when you look at the photos others have shared of their dual return pumps. Darn it, back to square one again...

Not sure if you’re still following this post but I’m really about to press the add to cart button on this sump (Smart Series) but I wanna be sure first. Where do you put your media? Or where would be a good place for it? I run chemi pure blue, matrix and denitrate.

In one of the three filter sock holes, I put a acrylic media sock holder. I have Purigen in now (with a sponge on top) but will switch to Chemi pure in a few weeks.

There is also a small chamber (in the signature series) before the return pump chamber, I placed a dozen media blocks.

@NervousReefer Keep in mind that you won't be able to use a rigid media cup with the Smart Series. I put my media in a bag and then in the sock with my Smart Series sump and it's a little tricky due to the sock holder design. Don't misunderstand me, I love the Bashsea sump but the Smart Series and Signature series are designed differently so choose carefully.

Thanks John for the input I went ahead with the Fiji cube 24. It gave me more cabinet room.

I figured I’d throw mine into the hat. It’s a bit customized so I’m not running into the dual pump- return compartment space issues. I am fitting two Red Dragon 3 speedy 100w pumps in there with plenty of room to spare. The first compartment is also customized in that I got rid of the sock compartment (I’m lazy so would never have used it) and replaced it with a rimless edge... this is so it can fit any rollermat out right now, and hopefully any future releases that hang on the edge of aquariums. Design is otherwise based on the SS60

LOVE the extra space for the return pumps! I just placed my order with Planet last week for a 220g, and the Bashsea SS60 is at the top of my list for a sump... and, it's the return chamber that has me most concerned since I want to run dual returns. Any chance you can comment on how much $$ the customization added over stock MSRP?

Awesome @ 220g! Mine is about 210g. As far as the price, I think it's not that much relative to the price of the SS60.. I would have to guess ~$100-150 ? which is ~5-10%? I can't quote on the exact amount since I moved all the baffles and re-worked the drain compartment too (to accept all hang on back filter rollers) so the premium I paid is for all the customization so it's impossible to break out just one modification. It wasn't a crazy amount tho. And certainly if I am spending this amount of money on pumps and sump then that small premium is irrelevant if I can run dual returns.

I really don't know why they don't just make this the standard design for the return compartment on their sumps.. You can pretty much run almost any dual pump you want and definitely any single pump you could ever want.. I would take that any day over a couple extra inches in the fuge section.

How big did you make that 4th (return pump) chamber?

I made the return section 12" long.. so it's 'footprint' is 12"x15".. The RedDragon 3 Speedy's are 9.25" long so I have plenty of length left over. I'll post up a pic when I get home of both of them in there.

For the rest, I made the drain section 10" long, the 3rd chamber/skimmer section 22" long, and the 2nd chamber/refugium section whatever was left (?-20").. remembering that I was using the footprint of the SS-60.

I really like sections 1, 2 & 3 (or I think I do, it'll be my first sump).... and for $1,000 and with 60" of length.... you'd think they would have designed it to fit dual returns. All I want to run is dual Reef Octopus VarioS pumps, which are relative small. By my best research, I THINK they'll fit, but only with about 1/2" to spare.

I designed mine for dual returns (Cor-20's)

i know im talking about the wrong brand here but i ordered a synergy reef sump. CL-60. i had the option to add returns. i have 4 returns on mine. some awesome looking sumps here tho. bashsea would have been my next pick.
Synergy has a great design too! I don't think you could go wrong either way. What are you using the additional two returns for?
