The only thing I know about lion fish is that they are an invasive species in The Gulf of Mexico taking over artificial reefs. They are quite tasty if you know how to prepare them. Shouldn't be kept as pets IMO.

Hiya

I'm pretty used to tropical tanks but have recently upgraded to a 285l Marine set up purely so I can have a lionfish. I bought the setup second hand, set it all up and had my local marine shop check my water quality before purchasing the fish. It's been in the tank now for about 3 weeks, its eating frozen food with no problems, is pretty active and loves chilling upside down. I was just wondering if somebody can tell me what type he is. He was sold as just a "Lionfish" but i would like to be able to know exactly which type, i would say it is roughly 7-8inches nose to tail but i'm unsure of age, the shop had him about 6 weeks. Thoughts???

Looks like a volition to me. Welcome to R2R

Welcome.
That is a volitan lionfish and they get massive. You may need to upgrade as it grows larger, beautiful fish!
They come in black, red and white, that appears to be the red one.
