This is my first time plumbing a tank, and after setting it up the durso standpipe seems to be sucking water and gurgling inside the sump. The line is 1/2” with 2 holes in the sides and a air line at the top of the durso, reduced to 1” at the bulkhead, and I have it going down to the bottom of the sump with a tee. So the 2 sound issues are the “sucking” water sound and it gurgling inside the sump. What are some suggestions on how I can fix this! Video attached! I plumbed the sump, but the pipes to the bulkhead were pre-installed when I bought the tank and does not come apart easily… and the tank is filled (no livestock yet) what are some fixes that I could do!

Start by drilling a 1/4” hole in the drain pipe, just below the sump water line! — this will help to prevent the siphon from starting and stopping!

Also, ensure that the air line/air port in the top of the standpipe aren’t clogged with salt creep/etc! — the duroso’s Achilles heel!

So just below where the pipe meets the sumps water level?

What about the “sucking” or “toilet flushing” sound would it help with that too?
In theory, yes! Though a hole above the water line may be more efficient here! — I do know I see many custom systems such as those made by Bashea using diagonal cut slots in the drain pipes from skimmer/etc to prevent the submerged drain pipe from starting a siphon and draining the water chamber in question!

Can you explain more what those diagonal cuts are? Not sure I’m understanding what you mean

I tried to think of a simple explanation that wouldn’t get into paragraphs of talking about vacuum and pressure; so I pulled up an old photo to show you what I mean!

These slots are on gravity drains, serving the same purpose as a drilled hole, just looking prettier!

They prevent water draining from starting a full siphon, which is what your plumbing is currently doing! — one the full siphon starts, your overflow box will drain faster than your return pump fills it, subsequently making the standpipe suck in a big gulp of air. This breaks the siphon, and the process repeats shortly thereafter once water draining down the standpipe and drain plumbing initiates another full siphon!

This is why I recommended checking the air vent on top of the Duroso for obstruction!

— typically the standpipe inlet does a 180 degree bend at the top, submerging the inlet/letting it vent and suck air through the air port at the highest point!

Ok drilling the hole seemed to fix the flushing sound, but now the air gurgling in the sump is actually louder, wondering how I should fix this

Get the drain tee right up by the surface? Or, make a muffler for the air hole? ( spare Skimmer air inlet muffler?)
