"Loudest" Fish you have ever kept?

Some fish species can make noises which often surprises people, species such as damsel fish, angelfish, and groupers will produce noise in different ways. One way is by using sonic (drumming) muscles which contract rapidly against their swim bladder, or grinding their teeth together to produce noise. Some fish will even burp or fart by expelling excess gas in their swim bladder. Most of the time these noises are used to ward off other fish or potential predators, but I know some people have heard it occur in their own home aquariums. If you have, what type of fish was it, and how far were you able to hear it?

not a fish but when I had a tiger pistol shrimp it would constantly make clicks with its attacks ( most of the time hitting glass or rocks rather than actual threats)

I used to hear an odd clicking sound from my tank whenever my sailfin and cuban hogfish got into it. Eventually I figured out the cuban hogfish would make a loud clicking noise when he went on the attack.

My 4.5-5” emperor. I think it’s a Female being her growth. Got my buddy one, and it’s gotten way bigger than mine and about to change colors. When I gave it to him his was 2”, mine was 3.75”. A year later his is 5-5.5” and mines 4.5 if 5. Just guessing and I had mine longer than he had his.

Either way love the her! And she’s a character that is for sure. Her grunts are super loud haha! I know when she’s ticked or hungry. Even with the room ac unit in I can still hear her.

A buddy of mine that had arowana’s and had peacock bass at one point, decided that he will add one to his tank. Simply dismissing my brothers advise.

Welp the little guy destroyed his tank! And since then (2 years ago), he has not been able to recover from the algae outbreak. He’s gonna have to do a massive WC with rodi. But that’s at 400g and no rodi unit at his house that would be a serous days work haha.

Agreed. I had an emperor that would "thunk" so loud, it sounded like someone knocked on the glass with their knuckles. Could hear it in the next room. He was the boss of the tank, and always had something to say.

Love it!!! My boss is a Blue Ring Annularis. It’s at 5.5” right now. Might have to rehome once corals go into my tank if it starts going after corals. They are worse than emperors. My buddies only nips here and there at new corals. I forget which ones exactly. Cracks me up when my buddy tells me the story haha.

This emperor would eat zoanthids and mushrooms like they were appetizers on a charcuterie board. LOL. But didnt touch a single other thing. Welp, he ate aiptasia too, so thats was a blessing. But clams, SPS, LPS, softies- he didnt care.

I don't have any noisy fish, except when they are feeding. The splashes are real.

The mantis shrimp clacking is super annoying though.

My diamond goby would pick up any hapless snail or hermit crab that happened to find it’s way into his cave, carrying it across the tank and spitting it out against the glass making a loud clicking sound.
