Naming corals is a marketing thing more than anything... This goes waaaay back..
The rule should REALLY be, do you like it? If so, buy it. Hopefully keep it thriving.
Yellow, gold, or whatever are descriptive and allow the seller to differentiate between various corals. I.e. the pink one is "x" dollars, the yellow is "y"..
The Shizbang super floopa doop is $463525374.00 and obviously MUCH more expensive...

That all said, there is such a thing lineage wich can be very important. But... In todays day and age, and the prevalence of very similarly colored corals, lineage is much harder to actually prove..

Now torches generally have at least 10 different names for the same color, all to make them seem fancy. Buy it if you like it
Such truth! I have euphyllia with multiple names and I’ve gotten to the point of I love it then it doesn’t matter! And with the reclassified genus of so many things these days it’s hard to keep up with everything!

While I do agree with you, knowing the trade name/value of different styles of torches is a way to ensure you aren’t getting ripped off.

In the first pic the three on the right are three different torches with three different values.

If a banana torch is $400 and you like it and feel it’s worth it then sure buy it and be happy. But that’s banana grail prices and you can find banana elsewhere for 250-300

These aren’t lineaged names, they are style names - like a joker torch or a holy grail. The name is attributed to a certain group of colors, and the price is based on the colors. I have seen people selling 24k torch as a banana for 400. And the 24k is really worth closer to 100-150. They slap the word banana (wrongly) on it and unsuspecting buyers pay double the price because they didn’t learn for themselves what distinguishes the two apart.

It’s not the buyers fault if they are scammed, they should be able to trust the seller. I’m just saying there’s nothing wrong with learning the names for a particular torch you like, shopping around to see if the pricing and color are consistent, and making sure you get the right item for a fair price.

I’d have to say I totally agree with you, there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there! Paying hundreds for something that is not what you thought is terrible! There’s also a lot of people who don’t know and are willing to say so and defer to people like you who do or who we are confident will say they don’t know either if that is the case. I think our job as reefers is to call out those who scam others so that people don’t get ripped off. That in and of itself is a slippery slope these days!
