I'm not going to be running a sump at first. I'd like to add some macroalgae to my display to help with nitrates. Possibly a dragon's breath since I like how they look. If I also add a kole or yellow tang will they just eat the entire thing?

Maybe and maybe not. Each fish has different habits. Some are picky and some are pigs. If one decides the dragons breath is on the menu each day then it might not last. Thats not bad thing either. You will have a happy fat fish and know what to feed it.
