so for my 180g i support my lfs and get my water needs thru them-paying handily for it and over oaying

What is needed to make my own water

My problem is i dont really have a great area to set up a water station and getting it transported to my fish tank

You need a RODI filter, salt, and a mixing bucket.

But you need a powerhead and heater in can right-how long does water last for

Water is good for a long while. Just check salinity before using it as the evaporation will cause salinity level to rise so you may need to add more fresh rodi

Yes, you do or at least helps. Unless you use a mix that specifically needs to be used right away, ie TM bio or red sea. Salt mixes tend to last a a good while as long as they do not get light.

You can also move water with a pump and a hose, which is what I do. My RODI setup is in the garage and I have to fill the ATO about every 10 days, its 15 feet away.

I have a 55 g drum for mixing with no heater. I live in SoCal and night time temps get to 46'. My tanks are 200g so adding 10 - 15 g of coldish water is not a problem and mixing salt (Tropic Marin Pro Reef ) is fine. No need for a heater

You need RODI, initial setup run about 100 bucks, you can set it up in your bathroom sink, underneath or above, easy to do, than run your 1/4 tubing from bathroom to container, your container should be around 15 to 30 gallons, you can use Brute or Bon, something like that, keep the container near your your tank so you do not have to do any lifting ever, you can mix your salt in the container, about 1/2 cup per gallon, than when the container is full just Disconnect the 1/4 tubing and put it back in your bathroom, get a float valve kit for your container about 10 bucks, easy to setup. Now if you want to do water changes get a second container and two DIY return pumps, this part I have it controlled by Hydros.
