Lately I've been noticing a lot more posts where the question or issue could have easily been addressed by using the search function and not creating a new thread.

Just a suggestion but it may be worth making the search field a little bigger or prominent so we don't end up with a ton of threads on the same subject.

I've been wondering about this myself - the new version has a few features I don't care for, and the search is one of them. Its kind of a pain to try and search a specific thread anymore.

Just out of curiosity, how does your search button appear normally? Mine is scrunched in with something else next to the I trader button, and I can't even read what it says. May just be a result of using IE, I don't know.

Interesting, mine is sitting over the top of the my posts button. Are you using IE or something else? If IE, what version are you using?

mine sits rather prominently under the sponsors banner, both on IE and Google Chrome.

You'll note the threads that are redundant information are generally created by the same few users who are all spamming for the contest. I just ignore them and figure it a side-effect of the contest, as the extra activity is helpful for reef2reef to be active in google's searches, which will get reef2reef more traffic. Just one of those things that has to be dealt with for now, though if you notice it's the same guy, you can always report it to a mod. Mods may feel the same way as you, but without anyone reporting it, they may feel they're the only ones feeling that way and not take action.

Actually some of the redundencies of threads as a result of the contest has been noted and at least in some cases removed. Unfortunately, as Brian said we can't be everywhere at once, nor do we see everything.

Hence;

Please feel free to report anyone you think is abusing the contest. While we do want to increase activity and engagement, we don't want the contest to be detrimental to the site either.

The search button seems fine to me. It's placed in a very common area, similar to where it's placed on most forums.

I think it's already been recognized that the ongoing contest has limited the amount of time people spend, searching, since that might nullify their need to post. In my opinion, people deciding NOT to search, and to post instead, even if their posts are redundant, is going to happen, specifically because of the contest and shouldn't be looked down upon. If a contest has been created, with a point system based on post count, then you've gotta expect contestants to attempt to raise their post count.
