BUT......

This one is fixing to be on it's way to my house. I'm selling my other three bigger trees above. $100 each. They have recovered nicely from shipping and now have more color and have perked up. Of course i'm feeding them. Wink Wink! You can see from the two pictures above. I did loose 4-5 of my smaller ones. They probably would have recovered with time, but I needed the space anyway so I just put them outside because they were looking bad.

No, I had them under a HPS. They don't reach for the light when I lower it. My black mangroves will point their leaves up to reduce light exposure. The Red's seem more tolerant but will get burned. The Reds love and tolerate a ton of light.

Very interesting build
I'm following because for the longest time I've wanted to do a long tank with a drop off at one end and a shoreline at the other with a mangrove lagoon region somewhere in between.

Was there a specific type or size HPS you used?

Any update? I’ve been growing mine for 2 years now. I am finally starting somewhat of a mangrove lagoon for them with hopes of getting a few of them large enough to start a display fuge.

Very cool thread! Following!

Well, I wish you "faster progress" than me. I am in sunny Southern Cal. lots of sun and never too cold. Yet my red mangroves grow "very slowly". Literally
"no growth" in 5 Winter months. No new leaves or roots( water temp is 78 deg. F). In 1 year they have 8 leaves each.
I don't think they like cold and dry. I "suspect" if you have a clear cover for the green part and somehow get some "warm moisture" in the covered area to simulate swamp condition they may grow faster. Sort of like a humid greenhouse.
Good luck!

I will definitely be following along. When I was a kid I went snorkeling in a mangrove lagoon, since then I've wanted to do something like this but I could never get my mangroves to take. Here is a pic I found online that I saved as inspiration.

Anyone know how to cause them to grow like this? I really love the look.
