I've voted!

I don't have much of funny oops story to share.. but my friend came to my place for the first time a few weeks ago and the first thing she noticed was blue lights in the windows. She asked if I was growing something I shouldn't, lol. Her reaction was funny when I told her yes, I was growing something.. corals.

My oops moments are usually scary and/or tragic. The one that comes to mind is an Indigo Hamlet that was so flighty and scared that it would jump out of the tank (at the store) just because your hand was in the water on the other side of the 200 gallon tank. He would flip out, swim the other side and flip out, then jump 6 feet away on the floor. He had jumped out of the tank at least 7 times, 4 of those times we found him basically dried out and not moving, barely breathing. Each time he was revived and returned to his tank only to recover completely. He never stopped eating, never hid excessively despite his "frady cat" nature. My manager wanted to buy him so we kept him in this tank at his request and tried to keep the lids on it all the time. One day, I'm in there scraping algae a little at a time so I could keep the lids on the tank as much as possible and there he goes flipping out again! First one end of the tank, then the other and he darts back behind the rocks. He ran right into the yellow head morray eel's mouth and was promptly eaten! I just thought "what a darn shame! He survived all those jumps just to dive directly into the mouth of an eel and get eaten" It was a little funny, but mostly tragic. I guess it wasn't my oops, but the Hamlet's. Does that count?

A time long long ago while doing a water change I spooked a fish so much that he leaped out of the water and hit me in the head. After a timely recovery from this unnerving experience I completed my task. Latter that day I was looking for the offending fish of which could not be found. While Checking back several more times to no avail, I decided to finally dump the waste water. As I was about to do so,I noticed movement in the bucket. To my amazement there was that darn fish that hit me in the head. With amazement and glee I returned him to the tank. He now lives Happily ever after.

THE END

Let see. Me and my wife (girl friend then) was walking in an lfs and saw a flame hawkfish lounging on a rock. My wife said "he is so cute". So i ask the shop employee about it being reef safe and invertebrate safe or not. They said "its completely reef safe and good with inverts". So we decide to take it home. As soon as i acclimate it and release it. That dang thing went straight for my fire shrimp and then cleaner lol. One expensive meal he had. Oh i want to flush him so bad but that will cost me even more money.

So I guess my big recent oops would be when making my 2 part mixes I put the alk in my mag bottle. A week later I poured some straight alk in my sump... sump turned white... I had a quick brain fart as to what the heck is going on immediately shut the valves and turned off the return pump and then drained my 95g sump... alk still went up to 15dkh... I can't imagine what it would have been if I didn't catch it quickly.

Anyways a few 100g water changes that day and it went down to 10dkh then back to 8.5 a week later.

That was my recent dumb oops

ah, is there ever a good oops story in the hobby? This has only happened twice, but I let the RODI go (I usually put 5 alarms every 15 min or so). I cooked dinner & then ran out to the groceries, while totally forgetting the RODI. Saw it when I came home. Only overflowed about a gallon fortunately.

Mixing fresh RODI water with Coral Rx to dip my corals for months and wondering why everything kept dying. Misread the instructions!

Keep in mind there was no internet...

I decided to have a sump and I selected the external Lifeqard Modules... kindda like this.

LifegardModularSystem-Group-small.jpg

The instructions said to glue the modules together. I did. I started it all up for the first time and I remember smiling as the hummed was so beautifully. Next thing I know BOOM! and the modules all blow apart under the pressure. Drained half the tank (3rd floor apartment) before I could stop it. Called Lifegard and discovered "glued" in our hobby means CEMENT, not silicone.

Best "oops" moment had to be when I mis-programmed my Calcium and Alkalinity dosers.

I had them both dosing at the same time and they were just precipitating out.

I was just left scratching my head over the following weeks why my levels wouldn't stabilize -_-
