marineland C3 sump

marineland donated me a C3 model sump for my 60 gallon cube. apparently all of the reviews are very negative i'm keeping the sump, no questions asked. my question is can i modify it to not use the dreaded Biowheels? i was thinking of placing cheato in the sump as well as a filter sock for the intake area. any suggestions would be appreciated

wow. just googled.. that's a horrible design.. may be alright for a fw setup but beyond that idk.. may be useful with some major modification..
