Hey all that feed masago....

Where in the WORLD do you find masago that has NOT had sugar added?? I am fortunate enough to live in Monterey California which has had had Asian markets for decades longer that it has been part of the United States of America. We have a number of markets... ALL sell masago -plenty of brands of it- but none without added sugar... One small shop even sells 2 different brands one with corn syrup and one with sugar. Are you guys just washing the sugar off? I guess I could soak it and simply poor it through a plankton sieve. What brands are you guys finding sell it without sugar added?

To clarify as well. I know this is sold on line (seemingly without sugar?) but I'm looking to see if people out there can find it in stores and what brands are actually shipping to stores. If you buy online you are paying overnight food prices -as it needs to be kept frozen in shipping -Think the price of shipping a frag of RR Pink Floyd 1/2 way around the country -but for a fish food ingredient.

EDIT: Actually this makes me rethink EVER putting masago in my tank. Apparently it isn't naturally red/orange either... https://www.chowhound.com/food-news/53595/terrible-tobiko/

I have to admit, I have been feeding regular masago for years. Yes it has corn syrup, and a little coloring, but I have never noted any ill effects. I have recently stopped feeding it, not because of a bad experience, but because the seafood stores around me sell Buffalo Roe, from the Buffalo fish. I can get 1 lb of this for under $5, which is much cheaper than masago. You sort of buy the whole ovary, so some ovarian tissue is present as well. The eggs are larger than masago, but not as large as salmon Roe. My fish love it, so if you live on the Mississippi, try it!
