I try never to chase numbers...I look for general ranges and judge by the results I get. I kept discus with great success and have moved into the saltwater side of things.
Numbers are a warning of something bad will happen if you stray to far to either side of the standard. Understand that stability is the key, not a specific set of numbers. We are not building a Jet engine people...I have and even these have a range of parameters that things can be. how would you like it if somebody was constantly changing what was in the air you were breathing.
