The one I've had, several times but it always crashes on me, is commonly called Fiji Green Bird's Nest, or Fiji Pik Bird's Nest if you get the pink variety. I really like the coral and it grows quickly and well but then it always crashes on me by STNing.

Yours is very pretty, just a different species I guess. It does look bird's nesty when it tables out. I think I used to have an 20" diameter coral skeleton of that, or a very similar, species from Indonesia back in the 80s-90s. It weighed a ton. A shame you had to let it go.

The Pink was one of my first corals back in '05. It lasted about 3 weeks. Put on a ton of branches and then bone white, no flesh overnight for no reason.

This one grows like a weed. I had a bunch of broken pieces just sitting in the sandbed behind the rock and it was just growing there. Mine is a really good beginner coral or a good one for a tank that has issues with birds nests.

The thicker branched ones are "easier" from the little research I've done (plus my personal experience). I've never had a thin branch survive long in my tanks but this one is ridiculous.

That's pretty close to the experience I have with it every time I try it. It will grow like a weed for a month or so, I think the longest was maybe six months and then STN starts at the base and doesn't stop. Fragging the good tissue slows it down but it seems determined to die.

That said the couple that own AZ Reef Monster source their Fiji Bird's Nest from their own tank and they have it for sale quite often so it is obviously capable of surviving.

This is one I picked up locally months ago. It only lasted about 3 months before it kicked the bucket. My tank was very new and going through a few things. I wonder how it would do today?

Here's a golden Bird's Nest that I had in my Halide tank years ago. It did very well there sitting at top.

Man, those are nice!

I never did run VHO's. That tank was running on 3 - 250w HQI MH's, 3 - 48" T5 HO's, and 9 12" Powerbrite bars around the MH's. That was about 15 - 16 years ago.
