They mentioned to android users, when there was any issue with the app, that they would credit them 2 years free of when they started to charge users for app services.. whether that’s additional services or any services is what I’d like to know.
I'm going to see Logan on March 1st..
I will ask him point blank.

Has reefbreeders started charging people to use their app yet? I was wanting a meridian, but not if they’re going to end up charging me to use the app..
I would like to address this rumor as clearly as I can.

The app as it is right now- with full cloud based control- is, and will always be, free to use with our lights.

As far as premium features go- that's for new and advanced features only, like bluetooth control, intelligent acclimation, etc.

In addition you can own those features outright with a lifetime license.

We're a small business that made a big investment and put a lot on the line to introduce new features that we think our users will love. If you don't feel that the new premium features are worth it for you, you don't have to use them. We have a fully functional and easy to use free version, and that will never change.

Our app is already one of the best and easiest to use in the industry- and we will continue to improve and maintain the base features already included with our app at no additional cost to you.

Thanks for the response. I’m only interested in using my phone to set the lighting schedule and set color intensities - ramping up to and down from. Will any future app or version of your app in the future allow those 2 features to be free? I ask because you mentioned “as it is right now”

They are free right now and will always be... Is what he is saying.

I currently have 3 schedules on my phone. I only use one but I can switch if I choose to.
I also have 3 old v2 fixtures. 2 running on the same schedule but they were on 2 different schedules. The 3rd light I will set up in a couple days too use for a frag tank. All I have to do is turn it on and pick a schedule. Done.

“As it is right now” tags the statement to the current firmware/version. An update makes it not the app it is right now. I’m not saying they’ll rug pull, but if I’m about to spend $2-3k then I’d like to know, respectfully.

I want to clarify any misunderstanding. When I said the app as it is now will remain free forever, I meant that all of the core functions currently available will always be free. This includes controlling the colors, setting schedules, sunrise and sunset modes, and syncing with the moon cycle, just as they have been for the past five years. These features are part of the standard app and will always remain available at no cost.

In the future, we are introducing premium upgrades that go beyond the standard controls. This is common with many apps, where advanced features are offered separately for those who want them. These upgrades do not take anything away from the base functionality but provide additional options for users who want more customization or automation.

One example is Bluetooth control. For the past ten years, every Photon light has had the hardware capability for Bluetooth, but we never enabled it because integrating it into the app would have cost around fifty thousand dollars. Until now, every Photon user purchased their light knowing it worked via Wi-Fi on 2.4 gigahertz. We recently unlocked Bluetooth functionality, but because of the cost involved, it is available as an optional upgrade. If you do not want it, nothing changes, and you can continue using Wi-Fi as before.

Another premium upgrade is our intelligent acclimation mode, which checks in weekly before progressing to the next phase of acclimation. That was also quite expensive to develop. When companies add new features, they have two choices. They can raise the price of every product to include the cost of development, or they can offer new features separately so that customers only pay for what they want. We chose to keep our lights more affordable by making these additional features optional rather than increasing the base price for everyone.

In addition we will be offering a location based variable sun schedule. This allows the light to follow natural sunrise and sunset cycles based on any location of your choice, ie great barrier reef, adjusting the sunrise and sunset time daily based on real time weather data. It can be useful for coral spawning, fish breeding, and creating a more natural environment, but it is not something that most users need.

App development is extremely expensive. The developers we work with earn significantly more than we do as a company, and the cost of building and maintaining advanced features is high. While we would love to provide every feature at no cost, every investment we make has to have a return. Otherwise, we would not be able to continue improving our products or supporting our customers.

The core functionality of the app remains unchanged and will always be free. The premium features are completely optional and are meant for those who want advanced functionality. If you prefer to use the app exactly as it is today, nothing changes for you. If these additional features interest you, they are available as paid upgrades. If this approach does not align with what you are looking for, I completely respect your opinion, and there are many other lighting options on the market to choose from.

I appreciate the discussion and hope this provides the full picture. Let me know if you have any further questions.

This is great information, thank you! Was the last thing I needed to make the purchase decision ;)

Not sure what your not understanding.
Kinda spelled it out right here.
Not sure what you’re not understanding.. If you have App v1.1* (as it is today), when v1.2 is released, it can add or remove certain features, therefore by literal and legal definition not the same as it was..
They clarified, so you can relax..

I'm totally relaxed, almost quitting time and going home.

Logan and reefbreeders are to notch and very responsive. You won't go wrong purchasing some reefbreeders lights.

Some of these features sound very exciting! when will they be available or are they now? i did the lifetime license also. I currently have Photons, would the licsense and upgraded app features transfer if i go to meridians in the future?

Went from this, a photon 48v2+, 48” lumenbar +24” lumen bar

And replaced with two Meridian 11. That’s it. And I’m getting better colors, more control, equal to better coverage, equal par, and less than half the leds. The new optics and spectrum are a game changer
